About Nathan Frankish

I am passionate about IT and all things technical, but above all else I enjoy a challenge. My background and experience has centered around improving support, processes and capability through automation and tooling uplifts, and giving the technical teams the support they need to deliver faster and more reliablyMy strongest skill is my desire to understand the end to end architecture and supporting infrastructure – even the areas outside my direct responsibility – It means that problems can be resolved before they materialise and enables us to deliver better reliability over all. To support this, I prefer working in roles where operations and delivery are combined so that I can be a part of the whole picture.I enjoy working with different systems. There isn’t one system that can do everything, so why should I limit myself to knowing only one option. I believe that knowing multiple operating systems and architectures ensures I can use the right tools for the right outcome. Windows / Linux / Containers / OnPrem / Cloud – All have their place – Knowing when, where and how to apply the right one is key.I’ve worked with 3 tier systems with multiple redundant layers, to systems that are well and truly past their used by date, covered in Band-Aids but are still powering on. I want to own the environment I’m supporting, I want to be in a position to make it better and drive change to support business needs and growth. Above all I want to improve it, and make systems deliver what they should - Successful outcomes for the business.I believe in simplicity over complexity. Complex problems can often be solved with the simplest of solutions. I bring this work ethic with me everywhere I go – and it has never failed me.

    Brisbane City, Queensland, Au
Great Southern Bank is a continuation of my time with Credit Union Australia, after having successfully rebranded on 2021-06-01. Highlights and MilestonesIncreased responsibility with the expansion of the team to include the Business Application Support Team, and the Database administration team.In 2021/2022, After the AWS foundational piece established the guardrails for our AWS capability, I lead the migration of over 50 critical business applications to AWS, redesigning components to be cloud native where possible. This brought the project back on track, and delivered on time, and with minimal business impact We have continued to maintain our critical business systems in line with approved SLA’sIncreased my teams engagement score to 4.85 , which ranks us in the 96th percentile globally.Reduced vulnerability footprint to support the Cyber improvement program through uplift in automation, and better systems management.Continued to deliver in excess of 750 production software deployments, with no reportable changed related failuresReduced tech debt, and increased standardisation by transitioning all applicable applications into containers running on OpenShift.Supported multiple business critical projects, ensuring they hit their deadlines and milestones includes:* Hub office relocations* Company Rebranding* IT Modernisation (including AWS Migrations, and infrastructure consolidation)* Open Banking transition to BAU* NPP PayTo* FATCAA minor technology restructure saw our platform be joined by the infrastructure team, which I supported while recruitment was underway. Expansion into AWS continues as needed. This opportunity has enabled further growth in my development skills, expand into product management, as well as supporting a platform aligns to my personal interests.
  • Nascomms
    Systems Engineer (Consultant)
    Nascomms 2011 - Present
    Brisbane City, Queensland, Au
As a family run business, Nascomms required someone they could turn to for adhoc infrastructure and application support assistance and guidance in the management of their core platform. In 2013, we migrated their legacy infrastructure to an externally hosted Infrastructure as a Service offering, including establishing a separate test and development environment, and increasing application and system resiliency across multiple sites.Recently I was proud to further drive their migration into more modern technologies stacks, utilizing AWS to run the heart of their core services. We took the opportunity to reduce the need to spin up and manage certain critical aspects of their infrastructure, and move to native AWS offerings such as RDS,S3 and SES, which enabled them to further improve on their system stability and high availability whilst reducing their operating costs significantly. In addition we introduced isolation between production and non production and ensured we have repeatable, automated, build and deployment processes for infrastructure - Changing the spin up time for new infrastructure from days to minutes. This has enabled me to further grow my skill set in the following technologies* AWS EC2 - Debian and Windows Server 2019 across multiple availability groups* AWS VPC and Peering* AWS RDS - SQL Server 2017* AWS SES (Email services)* AWS CloudFront (CDN)* AWS S3 Buckets with Lifecycle management* AWS IAM
  • Cua - Credit Union Australia Limited
    Platform Applications Support Manager
Cua - Credit Union Australia Limited Nov 2019 - May 2021
    Brisbane, Queensland, Au
In a newly created role of Platform Application Support Manager, I have been further challenged by adding the 24x7 Mainframe Operations team (CompOps) to my existing DevOps team portfolio.Taking the passion for process automation and improvement that I applied to the DevOps team, we have seen an uplift in team capabilities – including introducing some much-needed flexible working conditions. Putting our automation skills to good practice we have helped further remove several manual and tedious tasks allowing the team to focus on their core capabilities. In the DevOps space, we have continued to grow and improve our automation and delivery capabilities through multiple internal activities, which have seen an increase in our deployments per year by 20%. Some of our key activities:We are significantly far along in our OpenShift implementation, which will see a significant infrastructure reduction.- Uplifted our monitoring through more advanced end to end tests using Selenium, SoapUI and Jenkins- Transitioning into better source, config and artifact management capabilities utilizing Nexus and GIT, and more commit/push based work flows- Re-platforming applications away from legacy Windows/RHEL Operating systems into up to date systems, with a preference for containerization where possible.COVID challenged our ways of working, and I'm extremely pleased to say we have embraced the changed ways of working – Be in across WebEx or other collaboration tools– Team engagement and communication has continued to increase – And productivity has continued to remain high.

At Credit Union Australia, I’ve been largely responsible for the operational support and solution delivery for the Online and Mobile Banking Platform, and internal systems and application automation. To be successful in this role, I've worked hard to drive, deliver and implement changes, largely in Automation, that see our time being spent on longer term issues, rather than repeatable and time consuming tasks. • Queensland Motorways Limited
    Network And Systems Team Lead
Queensland Motorways Limited Jun 2013 - May 2015
Working for Queensland Motorways was one of my biggest learning opportunity and enabled me to grow both technically and as a person. I managed a team of 6 who are responsible for maintaining systems operations and project delivery of approximately 100 Windows servers running a variety of services for our corporate systems, as well as over 120 Red Hat Servers which provide our sap and tolling solutions. We were also are responsible for all network and security aspects of the Queensland Motorways environment.Every day I worked with enterprise equipment such as IBM System X pizza boxes and blade centres, IBM System P servers, as well as IBM V7000, DS8100 and DS5100 storage units, and Cisco switches and routersTo help maintain such a large and dynamic environment, I actively sought to better my skills in managing enterprise applications such as Commvault Enterprise Backup Software for company wide backups, Vmware ESX, Red Hat Satellite Server for provisioning and deployment of Red Hat based systems. This is, of course, on top of managing the usual variety of Windows 2008 services such as DNS, DHCP, Active Directory, Terminal services, Exchange and so forth. From an application level, I've learnt and gained experience over IBM platform products such as IBM's Web Content Management, Enterprise Service Bus, Message Queuing, and WebSphere Application Services. I have also expanded my knowledge in the basics of administration in Oracle RDMS, and Microsoft SQL and Reporting Services, in order to better my skills in these systems and also be able to provide assistance to the other support teams when required. To sum it up, there isn't a lot inside of the Queensland Motorways IT operations and solutions that I didn't had the opportunity to support, maintain and improve as part of Business as Usual operations and project delivery.
