As the first ever Community Member Service Representative (CMSR), I helped create and shape the position, by piloting the program, literally writing the manual on how it would be contextually replicated, increasing the scale of Express with the additional CMSRs I helped train and coordinate. I developed my unique role to serve as a facilitator between Express, our non-profit service provider partners, including the project pilot partner, and the low income and Spanish speaking clients we collectively served, by providing informational services, fundamental financial training, credit union services, and pay day loan alternatives. During my brief tenure with Express Credit Union, we increased membership significantly, almost exclusively among the targeted low income and or under-banked communities. Express exists as a collaborative ingenious partnership funded and supported by numerous partners, most significantly, the Medina Foundation, BECU and ECU to: "Provide affordable financial services to low & moderate income people in King County. In doing so, help them build assets and achieve financial stability." In King County approximately 56,000 households live at or below poverty income levels. This population is often un-/under-banked and frequently become entangled in the difficult, costly, ongoing payday lending cycle. Express partners with local community social service agencies to provide financial services and advice to their clients. The goal is to help low income individuals and families out of the cycle of predatory lending, while also providing them with financial literacy and education.
