My background is in Physics, with a passion for selling, marketing and international commercialisation of novel technologies. I’m a serial entrepreneur, having started several companies myself and supported many others in consultative, investor and non-executive roles.My corporate life started in Germany as a salesman for the wonderful firm of Oxford Instruments, where I became Marketing & Strategy Director and progressed to being a Managing Director of two subsidiaries. I founded technology commercialisation boutique Qi3 in Cambridge in 1999. This business is rooted in the technologies of sensing and instrumentation and nowadays focuses on applications mainly in the space sector, but also aerospace, environment, security and healthcare.In 2010 I started investing full time under the moniker Qi3 Ventures. Two thirds of my investments are in engineering and physics-based technology businesses at early stage. I invest mostly as an angel and I’m pleased to be associated with networks such as Cambridge Angels. Qi3 Ventures is also a Limited Partner in the Seraphim Space Fund, and I’m a member of its’ Advisory Board. I love working as an Entrepreneur in Residence for the Space Camp accelerator programme.In 2014 I co-founded award winning online wine club Honest Grapes together with my business partner Tom Harrow. This Qi3 Ventures portfolio business is now transitioning from startup to scale-up. I’m proud that it has won several awards for environmental sustainability (Drinks Business Green Retailer of the Year and Decanter Green Champion) and as the overall ‘Outstanding Wine Retailer of the Year 2020’ by Decanter and 'Fine Wine Retailer of the Year' by The Drinks Business. It’s a tribute to a dedicated and hardworking team, determined to making the thrill of artisan wines available to a growing club membership. Business Development And Strategy Director, National Graphene InstituteUniversity Of Manchester May 2013 - Feb 2014Manchester, GbI worked on a project (through Qi3) in a leadership role in the establishment of new National Graphene Institute. My goals were to support the NGI in developing UK and international leadership in the research, engineering and production of graphene and other two dimensional materials. This resulted in several new industrial partnerships, including a new £60m Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre.The isolation of graphene by Sir Andre Geim and Sir Kostya Novoselov in 2004 rapidly led to award of a Nobel Prize in 2010. The commercialisation opportunities are extensive, and Manchester has hosted hundreds of industrial visitors and engaged in over twenty partnerships, with industry keen to exploit the properties of this new material. Having lived through the development cycle of superconductor and semiconductor materials and devices, working with the great team and resources at Manchester was too good an opportunity to miss. This is a national and international effort, and I established partnerships with research groups and companies worldwide. -

It was a fantastic opportunity to put an organic growth strategy into action. I hired a team of Product Marketing Managers and a crack Marcoms team. We streamed the division's business into eventually eight market-oriented groups. We refreshed product ranges and acquired new technologies through internal development, university and corporate alliances and infill acquisitions. This led to a tripling of sales and fivefold increase in profit over four years.
