My desire to become an English teacher comes from my goal of promoting equity and equality in the teaching space. As a person from a mixed-race upbringing (Filipino, Chinese, French, etc.), I want to bring diversity into a classroom that once did not allow their presence. English classrooms are often perceived as monolingual spaces, but that does not have to be the case. Everyone's experience and cultural outlook are crucial to understanding the world around them. I want to make my classroom similar to life: a cultural epicenter where everyone feels comfortable expressing themselves. Outside of my major, I have grown through my previous occupations. Through my 5+ years of job experience, I have learned to work efficiently and effectively in team environments, acting as a model for new employees. I have taken charge of groups, both at my jobs and clubs in college and with my Eagle Scout Project. To relax, I find solace in the arts. Whether music, film, television, or the written word, studying and enjoying media opens gateways to new cultural understanding. Media is just another communication tool for individuals with different perspectives. By absorbing these differing viewpoints, I can become a beacon for my students.
