I am helping build Plonts (plonts.com)—a public benefit corporation that discovers and designs microbial communities to transform inexpensive plants into new categories of sustainable fermented foods. CurrentAfter making cheese in my basement at the end of my PhD, I moved into a $2000 minivan, came to CA, and started Plonts as a public benefit corporation. Using money saved from graduate student stipends, I validated making aged cheese from sustainable, cheap, and healthy plants (boy, aging cheese takes a long time) while renting space in the corner of a pizza shop. I raised our first $1M in grants and venture funding. After two years validating that my individual vision wasn't a hallucination, I shifted gears into building the team needed to bring that vision to life, which included recruiting my first investor Josh to join as a cofounder.
