About Nathaniel Henning

I'm a scientist in the Chemical Biology group at Vicinitas Therapeutics, where we use our targeted protein stabilization platform to discover novel therapies for cancer and genetic diseases. At Vicinitas my work is focused on using mass spectrometry to identify ligands to proteins of interest and characterize protein stabilizing molecules. Previously my research has involved expanding the scope of targeted protein degradation and developing other induced-proximity platforms, including deubiquitinase-targeting chimeras (DUBTACs), in Dan Nomura's lab at UC Berkeley. Other past work includes discovery and optimization of covalent kinase inhibitors and SARS-CoV-2 Mpro inhibitors.

Nathaniel Henning Work Experience Details
  • Vicinitas Therapeutics
    Scientist Ii
Vicinitas Therapeutics May 2022 - Present
    Berkeley, California, United States
At Vicinitas I work to advance our targeted protein stabilization platform, investigating how deubiquitinase-targeting chimeras (DUBTACs) can be used to treat disease and studying the mechanisms behind pharmacological protein stabilization.
  • University Of California, Berkeley
Phd Graduate Student - Chemical Biology Program
University Of California, Berkeley Aug 2019 - May 2022
Discovered deubiquitinase-targeting chimeras (DUBTACs) that induce stabilization of target proteins through deubiquitination. Harnessed the E3 ligase FEM1B for targeted protein degradation using a novel covalent ligand. Discovered and optimized covalent inhibitors of SARS-CoV2 Mpro. My work in each of these projects involved synthetic chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology, and chemoproteomics, and has provided me with experience in covalent ligand discovery and induced proximity modalities.
  • Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Research Technician - Nathanael Gray Lab
    Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Sep 2017 - Jun 2019
    Boston, Massachusetts, United States
Participated in a variety of medicinal chemistry projects, involving lead optimization of a covalent Src kinase inhibitor and development of several targeted protein degradation tools to degrade new targets and recruit new E3 ligases.
  • Research Group Of Professor Sunhee Choi
    Student Research Assistant
Research Group Of Professor Sunhee Choi Jan 2016 - May 2017
    Middlebury
Investigated the production of reactive oxygen species in the reaction between sugars and amyloid-beta peptide in relation to Alzheimer’s Disease, using HPLC, LC/MS and UV/Visible spectrometry.
