Research Assistant in the Mechanical Engineering department Robotics Lab under Dr. He Shen. We began our research in Fall 2015 by studying vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology and applications. First, I studied academic papers, textbooks, and other scientific source material, then I designed a VTOL UAV in SolidWorks CAD software and analyzed the design using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis techniques to draw conclusions about the design and its limitations. Currently my research has shifted to the design of the physical flight-transition mechanism, and I have developed and fabricated two proof-of-concept mechanisms for the UAV design to enable transition between horizontal and vertical flight. As a research assistant, I create reports that review the progress of the project and set future goals. Also, I regularly aid Dr. Shen by reviewing his proposals and academic papers and assisting with writing and revisions.

Brady Sheet Metal is an all-custom metal shop. As such all projects required ingenuity, attention to detail, and problem solving. Measured on-location for custom flashings, fittings, or various other special custom parts. Each worker supervised their own projects, making time-management, problem-solving, and creative thinking imperative to daily project success. Work closely with an in-house welder requiring swift yet careful communication to aid in proper fabrication of welded parts. Forklift, scissor lift, and boom lift operation. Operation of press brake, shears, punches, drills, mills, spot welder, and various other saws and grinders. Worked with galvanized steel, stainless steel, hot and cold rolled steel, milled aluminum, anodized aluminum, copper, brass, and zinc, from 26 gauge to 1/4 inch steel. Projects ranged from high-end zinc countertops in a Malibu beach home, to custom gutters at NASA JPL, to special guards for one-of-a-kind machines at a special aeronautical fastener plant in Burbank. Projects often required expert knowledge of materials, difficult fabrication techniques, and the ability to quickly and effectively communicate with customers, coworkers, and management while working with expensive materials under time pressure. I moved on from Brady Sheet Metal to pursue my education full-time, encouraged and supported by my employer.

Receive orders and fabricate parts accordingly from various materials including galvanized steel, stainless steel, copper, and aluminum. Fabricate shop-standard gutters and flashings, as well as design and fabricate custom flashings, downspout leader heads, and various other custom parts. Communicate effectively with coworkers and management. Install flashings, skylights, and other parts at high profile commercial construction sites. Operate forklift daily. Operate plasma cutting table, including computer cutout designs, table repair and maintenance, and operation. I left Empire Sheet Metal on great terms as I moved an hour away to Pasadena. I quickly found work at Brady Sheet Metal with a recommendation letter from my employer at Empire Sheet Metal.

Summer employment as I saved up for the move to California. Poured concrete including surveying, measuring, framing, digging, pouring, smoothing, and finishing of driveways, footings, slabs, foundations, stairs, and supports for both residential and commercial clients. Operation of various concrete saws, jackhammers, screes, and other concrete construction tools and machines. Driving and operation of dump truck, excavator, and bobcat. Demolition of existing concrete slabs using hammer jack bobcat attachment, saws, and excavator. Installation of fencing for residential and commercial clients including a large power plant requiring work security clearance and safety knowledge. I left Hester on great terms with recommendation from my employer that aided in attaining employment at Empire Sheet Metal upon relocation to California.

Operate computerized bending break, shear, and roll-formers to fabricator orders for both residential and commercial customers. Orders ranged from a few parts for someone's home, to thousands of sheets for whole commercial structures. Carefully fabricate large production orders while ensuring quality and consistency in parts. Some custom work for special louvers and downspout leader heads, as well as custom flashings and gutter. The ability to maintain a constant workflow under pressure was a necessity, while also approaching design problems creatively and efficiently. The ability to communicate effectively with management, the office, and customers was crucial to the success of projects. I worked on and off at Magnum Metals during my time as a part-time student, as my employer encouraged my education. They were flexible and gracious with my schedule. I left Magnum Metals on great terms with my employer to prepare for my move to California.

I bought this business as a senior in high school via a small loan. I oversaw all business operations from interior design, to inventory, product selection, customer service, sales, taxes, and business development. Served as liaison between the Tupelo Skatepark Associate and Tupelo Parks and Recreation. Managed two employees that aided sales, inventory, and customer service from 2010 to 2012. Communication, leadership, ingenuity, and problem solving were all crucial components of running a successful business. I closed the business in 2012 to continue my path into higher education to become a mechanical engineer.
