Research Assistant in the Mechanical Engineering department Robotics Lab under Dr. He Shen. We began our research in Fall 2015 by studying vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology and applications. First, I studied academic papers, textbooks, and other scientific source material, then I designed a VTOL UAV in SolidWorks CAD software and analyzed the design using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis techniques to draw conclusions about the design and its limitations. Currently my research has shifted to the design of the physical flight-transition mechanism, and I have developed and fabricated two proof-of-concept mechanisms for the UAV design to enable transition between horizontal and vertical flight. As a research assistant, I create reports that review the progress of the project and set future goals. Also, I regularly aid Dr. Shen by reviewing his proposals and academic papers and assisting with writing and revisions.

Brady Sheet Metal is an all-custom metal shop. As such all projects required ingenuity, attention to detail, and problem solving. Measured on-location for custom flashings, fittings, or various other special custom parts. Each worker supervised their own projects, making time-management, problem-solving, and creative thinking imperative to daily project success. Work closely with an in-house welder requiring swift yet careful communication to aid in proper fabrication of welded parts. Forklift, scissor lift, and boom lift operation. Operation of press brake, shears, punches, drills, mills, spot welder, and various other saws and grinders. Worked with galvanized steel, stainless steel, hot and cold rolled steel, milled aluminum, anodized aluminum, copper, brass, and zinc, from 26 gauge to 1/4 inch steel. Projects ranged from high-end zinc countertops in a Malibu beach home, to custom gutters at NASA JPL, to special guards for one-of-a-kind machines at a special aeronautical fastener plant in Burbank. Projects often required expert knowledge of materials, difficult fabrication techniques, and the ability to quickly and effectively communicate with customers, coworkers, and management while working with expensive materials under time pressure. I moved on from Brady Sheet Metal to pursue my education full-time, encouraged and supported by my employer.

Receive orders and fabricate parts accordingly from various materials including galvanized steel, stainless steel, copper, and aluminum. Fabricate shop-standard gutters and flashings, as well as design and fabricate custom flashings, downspout leader heads, and various other custom parts.
