Environmentalism and the issues it encapsulates are often thought of as existing within the confines of traditional hard sciences. While there is truth in that belonging, it neglects analysis that is important to fully understand the issues we face as a society, as well as how we will adapt and overcome said issues. Where hard science helps us understand our predicament as well as pushing technological advancements that will alleviate our situation, the mechanisms that will enact these means lie outside the realm of hard science. How we react to challenges of climate change is important on the level of the self, but any response will be that of the cumulative society. Understanding that difference and knowing how to bridge the difference is the keystone to addressing issues of communication, acknowledgment, mobilization, and even societal change. When environmentalism is taken out of the solitary box of science, it can flourish into something quite beautiful. Outside of the existential concerns we face with it, the environment serves as the foundations of our communities, it serves to provide over 40% of aliments used in medical practice, even fosters personal connections with itself, whether secular or spiritual. It is within this generation that we have the potential to change environmentalism’s context from that of societal end times to that which we engage in both stewardship and belonging to.
