CBRN R&S Platoon (heavy) conduct searches, surveys, surveillance, sampling, and reconnaissance to confirm or deny the presence of a CBRN hazard. The CBRN R&S Platoon (heavy) detects and provides field confirmatory identification of CBRN hazerds, it provides early warning of contamination for supported units, provides limited conventional reconnaissance when not in a CBRN contaminated environment, and locates, identifies, marks, and reports contaminated areas and identifies bypass routes.

Then Battalion CBRN Staff NCO plans, conducts and evaluates individuals and collective CBRN training, and provide technical advice on all CBRN operations and hazards for company and higher-level organizations.

Then Squadron CBRN and Protection NCO plans, conducts and evaluates individuals and collective CBRN training, and provide technical advice on all CBRN operations and hazards for company and higher-level organizations.

Supporting Special Operations. The CRD may conduct operations unilaterally without direct support from a Special Forces operational detachment A (SFODA) or other operational entity.
To conduct these operations, the CRD requires a more SF-oriented skill set to support infiltration, exfiltration, survival, escape, evasion, and coordination. This capability set is what differentiates the CRD Soldiers from the other military occupational specialty 74D personnel assigned to the SFG(A)s.* Conducting Inherent Tasks for the CRD. The CRD can infiltrate and ex filtrate specified AOs by air, land, or sea. The role of SF varies with the environment and the level of activity. When directed, the CRD can conduct operations in remote and hostile environments for limited periods with minimal external direction and support. Extended operations require that the CRD or CDA be attached to an SFODA or other operational entity. The inherent tasks are those that may or may not be done for every mission and do not fall within the other supporting missions.* The CRD core mission is to conduct CBRN reconnaissance and surveillance functions in support of the SO missions (SR, CP, and DA). This support may be conducted in all operational environments and usually supports strategic and operational objectives. They may be conducted unilaterally by the CRD or as a supporting function or mission of an SFODA or other operational entity. Specific functions may require the CRD to operate in increased levels of protection. The CRD maintains close coordination with the supported force to ensure tactical security during operations.* The CRD conducts missions to determine the nature, scope, and extent of CBRN hazards activity on selected targets. These functions may support maneuver or deployment of conventional or coalition forces in the deep fight or be conducted to gather more information about suspect sites in the SSE role.

CBRN Specialists conduct the following: CBRN Room Operations; operation and maintenance of CBRN equipment; submitting and maintaining CDE reports; training decontamination, reconnaissance and survey teams; training all Soldiers on individual CBRN tasks.

The role of the CBRN R&S Platoon (light) is to conduct CBRN reconnaissance and surveillance missions in order to answer the commander's information requirements, provide early warning to the force, enable targeting of threat CBRN systems, and enable freedom of maneuver allowing decisive action. CBRN reconnaissance platoons are the infantry brigade combat team (IBCT) commander's primary organic CBRN capability. The CBRN R&S Platoon (light) must be capable of integrating with any of the battalions of the IBCT in the execution of main effort, shaping, and supporting operations.The R&S Platoon (light) will conduct operations in close contact with enemy forces, hazardous chemical/explosive environments, and in civilian populations that are intrinsically linked to enemy information campaigns and proxy operations. Personnel selected for the R&S Platoon (light) must demonstrate the maturity, technical and tactical competence, and mental toughness for this mission.
