Nathan was seconded by WorleyParsons to Suncor Energy’s Sarnia Refinery working as the Turnaround Engineering Coordinator. In this role he was responsible for coordinating a portfolio of engineered maintenance packages and capital projects for a five week unit outage (turnaround). This includes 60+ maintenance changes with a value <100k, and 18 capital projects with a value between 100k and 6M. His duties included:Prior to Execution• Acting as the single point of contact between the Engineering and Turnaround group.• Managing a portfolio of maintenance changes to be completed in the turnaround window.• Managing the SAP notification process from APPL through to COMP.• Developing and maintaining milestone dates and execution metrics with engineering.• Coordinating the change management process to add or remove scope after freeze date.• Cost and schedule reporting for the portfolio of maintenance and capital projects.• Expediting the engineering construction packages for the maintenance changes.• Chairing a monthly status review meeting to update on progress.During & After Execution• Attending the daily contractor meetings as the engineering representative.• Acting as the single point of contact for found work requiring engineering involvement.• Managing the engineering lessons learnt register and incident investigation.• Assistance with the Operating and Maintenance manuals PM program for new installations.Major projects included:• Developed a de-inventory system for the sites Amine (MDEA) tanks, approx. 150,000 gal.• Upgrades to the high temperature, high pressure hydrogen heater system.• Developed a temporary HS2 scrubber system required for regulatory compliance.• Assistance with the catalysis replacement program for required reactors during the outage.• Assisted with an emergency reactor tray replacement as part of discovery scope.• Numerous redundant equipment demolition projects.

Hunter Office, Newcastle

Nathan worked in WorelyParsons Newcastle office providing project management and engineering services to customers in the Hunter Region of NSW. His main duties included:• Proposal preparation for Hunter customers, preparing tender documentation and pricing.• Project delivery services engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM).• Project managing multi-discipline projects and upgrades.• Risk management facilitation on a wide variety of projects.Major projects included:• Coordination of a portfolio of 20+ maintenance projects at Ulan Coal Mines Surface operations. This project involved being the key point of contact for the customer and responsibility for packaging and send work back to the HUB office.• The automation and upgrade of the existing Train Loadout facility at Ulan Coal.• The relocation of an ammonium nitrate depot between two separately managed mine sites.

Hydro Aluminium Smelter, Kurri Kurri

Nathan was seconded by WorleyParsons to provide Project Management services to the Hydro Aluminium Smelter. His main duties included: • Project delivery services including engineering, procurement and construction management • Project managing multi-discipline projects and upgrades. • Raising expenditure proposals, managed cost and scheduling control. • Management of plant personnel and contractors within the customer’s plant. • Risk management facilitation on a wide variety of projects.Major projects included: • Supply pre-fabrication station for the carbon plant baking furnace replacement project. • Back engineering of existing jacket heated batch mixer installed in the 1960’s. • Addition of a DC dual power supply to existing AC runway cranes. • Improvements to the isolation and verification of the Heat Transfer Medium (HTM) system.

Nathan deferred his studies in 2008 for 12 month to gain industrial placement, as part of the UNISS scholarship program. His main duty involved the design of pressure vessels as per AS1210 standard for unfired pressure vessels. Major projects included: • Development of high temperature brazing procedure (not commonly used in the company) • Design of low temperature high pressure electric heat exchangers. • Design of lifting beams and development of lifting plans for large complicated lifts.

Townsville, Australia

Nathan worked as the construction engineer on a major upgrade of the Yabulu Nickel Refinery in Townsville. The project was for the removal and installation of an existing onsite boiler as part of a larger upgrade of the facility. His role was to provide engineering and administration support to the onsite project manager.

During university, Nathan worked briefly as an underground assistant to the shift fitter at Kestrel coal located outside of Emerald. This position was only for the three, fortnight long mid semester breaks during 2006 and was valuable in gaining exposure to the mining industry early in his career.
