Toronto is a fascinating city. Lately I've been exploring its past and present via several projects. My most recent project is Station Fixation, a whimsical visual journey to the past and present of every TTC subway stop. My website, Historical Maps of Toronto, won a Heritage Toronto Award of Merit. The site has become a valuable online research resource, and is accessed daily by students, teachers, genealogists, academic researchers, librarians, real estate agents, history enthusiasts, urban planners and civil servants, neighbourhood associations, and private citizens—all looking to discover more about the city in which they live.The companion projects, Fort York and Garrison Common Maps (a collaboration with the Friends of Fort York), and Goad’s Atlas of Toronto—Online!, provide additional windows into Toronto’s cartographic past. Through these historical maps, we can achieve a better understanding of how Toronto began and how it evolved into the bustling metropolis of today.
