About Nathan Ring
It was one of those midwestern January days where the temperature didn’t matter because the wind chill knocked it down 20 degrees. I held a piece of wood in my hands topped with a painted picket sign. I was 12 or 13 years old with my parents and my younger sister and hundreds of workers on strike against the Detroit News. Bundled in my jacket with my black snow boots and hand me down gloves, I walked a picket line with my family and those workers. My parents weren’t strikers from the Detroit News themselves. They were union members (UAW and UFCW) but we were there because workers stand together. My dad cancelled the Detroit News when the strike started and subscribed to the Oakland Press. In fact, he hasn’t subscribed to the News since. It wasn’t my first picket line. I had been on many since I was a small child. Some when my parents were on strike, but most when they were not and others were. A true lesson in solidarity. It is in precisely those moments that I grew to love the labor movement.15 years later, I became a law clerk for the UAW in my second summer of law school. After law school graduation, I took a job representing labor unions, ERISA/ Taft-Hartley trust funds, and employees. Why do that when I could be doing so many other things with my practice?Because I remember the strikers on the Detroit News picket line. Those who lost health and retirement benefits. Because I see my family in the faces of the union members and employees I represent. That strike ended badly. I work every single day to make sure that workers get the protections they deserve. I represent my clients in litigation, administrative actions, and negotiations in Nevada, Oregon and Washington. Why? Because workers deserve legal representation. They deserve to be heard, paid the wages they are owed, permitted to organize into unions, collectively bargain, strike and picket for fair wages, have guaranteed health and retirement benefits and to only be fired for cause. That is why I fight every single day for my clients.
