In 2001 Nathan joined Internetivity Inc. and within two months renamed, rebranded and relaunched the company as Databeacon Inc. The company had $10 million in fresh VC money, just over 20 employees, and a handful of reference customers using its Java-based data analysis software that deployed over the Web. Databeacon occupied a crowded enterprise software space filled with exponentially larger competitors. It was a classic requirement for a larger than life brand presence to bust through the market noise, so Nathan created Storydata.com – a site that demonstrated Databeacon software with data on topical new stories of the day – SARS data from the Center for Disease Control. Axis of Evil nation comparisons from the United Nations. The Durex Sex Survey. EPA car and truck mileage stats. World Cup Soccer data. Etc. With 180,000 unique visitors and 4.9 million Web hits to the Storydata.com portal, the site doubled Databeacon's Web traffic. It attracted new customers like Statistics Canada and the East of England Observatory. It was listed as one of Yahoo's Most Useful Sites on the Web and given an ExpertPR Award for "site most useful to journalists" - after several hundred of them from around the world wrote or broadcasted about Storydata.com and the technology that ran it. Two years after the launch of Storydata.com, the Ottawa Citizen’s James Bagnall stopped in to profile Dabeacon's CEO Andy Coutts for a story entitled "Swinging for the fences". Coutts was now in charge of a 40-person team identified as having the potential to build a $100 million company.
