About Nathan Seither

I believe in all parts of a system having purpose, accountability, flexibility, and dependability. This applies both to software and, even more so, people. I believe in systems that enhance the ability of their constituent components to communicate and collaborate effectively. From a software standpoint, this manifests as a love of small, directed, highly composable services that define exactly what they will and, just as importantly, will not do. On the human side, I am an advocate of teams composed of many varied personalities, backgrounds, and methodologies united by a common passion. My main experience and passion is with Ruby, specifically in Rails applications. I'm familiar with the beginnings, when design considerations are often shelved in the name of velocity, and also with the more advanced age, when that lack of design has left the team with a codebase that has become a rigid, highly opinionated, pain to develop in. With all things I do, I look to write software that cares most about clarity and ability to change. In the startup space, the most important speed is the speed at which one can change, be that for the sake of the product or for the sake of performance. Flexibility is the single greatest asset a technology company can have.I strive to help create environments that foster frequent spirited, but always respectful, technical discussions. I've been instrumental in elevating the level of code review at every company I've worked. Developers felt more comfortable in asking questions of others code and explaining their own to others. When others on the team may be leery of pursuing new ways to help us work together, leery of rocking the boat, I am quite comfortable putting my own neck on the line for the prospect of helping create an environment where highly-motivated people feel the freedom to pursue the great ideas they have.

Architected CoverHound's commercial insurance application from the ground up. • Coverhound
    Software Developer
    Coverhound Mar 2015 - May 2016
    Remote, Us
Member of direct integrations team, focused on dealing directly with insurance carriers to transmit our customers' information to them to get quick, accurate insurance quotes without customer's ever needing to leave our application. We deal extensively with carrier APIs, which are primarily SOAP, and provide a single simple interface for other pieces of our system to communicate to the quoting and binding service, on our end exposing a REST API. The work of this team allows customers to, if they wish, have a fully online comparison shopping experience.I designed and implemented an ORM on top of Redis, that much like what the ActiveRecord ORM does with SQL, abstracts the internals and allows developers to freely persist records without having to worry about the internal data structure that holds them. This has led to greater use of Redis within the company, not just for caching, but for actual application logic, and much improved documentation of the ways it is being accessed.
  • The Hunt
    Software Developer
    The Hunt May 2014 - Mar 2015
    San Francisco, Ca, Us
I worked primary on the platform team, building out a Rails REST API for our various native mobile clients to communicate with. I was a strong voice for the use of solid object-oriented design within our Rails codebase, helping to move away from God object database models and horribly un-RESTful controllers. Extensive work done on how to cache as much as possible and improve performance of a very asset-rich application.I was team lead on our internationalization project. This entailed not only handling translating application copy into all our supported languages, but architecting and implementing the system to geocode content and present that content to users in the correct locales. I created an interface with fine grain controls to allow the product team to know exactly how much content was created in a given locale and control how much local content was being shown in each locale.I also did basic iOS development, focusing mainly on functionality and user experience. While not spending large amounts of time building out new UI pieces, I had a substantial focus on bug fixing and dealing with the App Store release and development cycle. I would shepherd release candidates through the cycle, setting timetables, triaging bugs from both internal and external QA, and checking in with all developers working on any piece slated for release. The Hunt was composed of very self-sufficient interdisciplinary teams. In addition to the interplay between the product (managers and designers) and engineering (frontend and backend), the nature of native app development had frontend and backend developers working very closely with one another. We had very effective techniques for specifying API contracts between the two, allowing us to have independent, non-blocking, development timelines.
