Seismic Outreach Co-Project Manager

Los Angeles, California, United States

As Co-Project Manager of ASCE's Seismic Outreach project, I led a project in which we send UCLA volunteers to middle schools to teach students about the engineering model, structural engineering, and sustainability. We guide them through the construction of a K'NEX structure (or a structure made of household items) which is tested and then brought to UCLA for a finale competition day. Our goal is to expand on these students' middle school curriculum, expose them to UCLA students and alumni who can offer guidance and support, and show them that they possess the physical thinking skills and creativity to pursue a higher education in STEM.In my position, I secured funding from sponsors and campus resources; delegated responsibility to our Project Directors; coordinated with school staff to plan school visits; updated our lesson plans, project guidelines, and presentations; and recruited volunteers within ASCE. Our project team's greatest challenges were learning to manage an in-person project despite missing a year of in-person event planning, reaching more schools and students than last year, and adapting our traditional, in-person project materials to the new 6th grade curriculum. We couldn't forget that Seismic Outreach is fundamentally a fun and non-competitive project; it allows our volunteers to take a break from their busy lives to spend time with kids and excite them about their education.

Executive Assistant

Los Angeles, California, United States

Internal Vice President

Los Angeles, California, United States

As Internal Vice President for ITE at UCLA, I planned virtual and in-person info sessions, class planning and research workshops, and officer retreat.ITE at UCLA is important to me, and I have been happy to dedicate my time to this club. Not only am I passionate about transportation, ITE has been a community of my closest friends and favorite people. I am proud to have helped students find career opportunities and exposure to the transportation industry through info sessions. I also aimed to help students new to campus find a community like I have.

Aug 2021 - May 2022

Transportation Co-Project Manager

Los Angeles, California, United States

For the ASCE Transportation Design project, I led a trip generation and level of service team for our redesign of LAX-it. We estimated future traffic conditions by researching LAWA's predictions of future rideshare trips, finding the proportion of these trips in and out of our LAX-it Redesign at peak hours, assigning these trips to routes based on local traffic counts, and then calculating level of service through Google Sheets. I also assembled and edited our technical report, and I created a signage plan in AutoCAD. We presented at the Pacific Southwest ASCE Student Conference (PSWC) and placed 4th of 14 competing schools with a score of 164, within 10 points of 1st place (174).For the ITE Data Collection project, I helped coordinate three days of site visits to Sprouts' Farmers Market in which a total of 12 volunteers counted trips from 7 am to 7 pm. I also co-led our team in writing a technical report on our findings, which won funds for our student chapter.

Aug 2020 - Jun 2021

Seismic Outreach Project Director

Los Angeles, California, United States

As Project Director for UCLA ASCE's Seismic Outreach, I attended all virtual school visits and weekly planning meetings.

Aug 2020 - Jun 2021

Project Engineering Intern

As Project Engineering Intern, I drafted and distributed RFIs, managed and distributed submittals, called subcontractors, and interpreted and distributed plan revisions. I took notes at foremans' meetings and owners' meetings over Microsoft Teams which gave me exposure to the players involved in construction: what their work is, how they carried out their work, and what motivates them. I also learned to markup and stamp documents in Bluebeam. Because of COVID, I spent limited time working in-person but learned to communicate effectively and frequently in a virtual setting.

Jun 2020 - Sep 2020

Transportation Project Director

Los Angeles, California, United States

For the ASCE Transportation Design Project, I led a three person field engineering team through creating traffic control plans for construction of a median and traffic signal replacement. We used Bluebeam to create these plans, referencing examples from the MUTCD. For the ITE Data Collection Project, I helped create a COVID travel behavior survey and analyze the results in Google Sheets. This was good practice speaking up to share my ideas in a virtual setting. Another student and I presented our survey at RSBITE Student Presentations and won funds for our chapter.

Junior Tennis Coach And Office Staff

Orinda, California

Led a court of students through drills and games during clinics and summer camps. Answered questions and handled club transactions as part time office-staff on weekends.Working as a tennis coach has been a joy throughout high school and college. To spend time with kids, organize games, and exist in the sun and fresh air for hours has felt therapeutic. At the same time, it has taken some personal boundary-pushing for me to feel its effects. Through coaching, I've learned how to manage social situations even when I don't feel my best: by being honest and showing up everyday. I've also learned how to accept and yield a leadership role without sacrificing my values. From every past day of coaching, I've learned to improvise experience-based decisions and changes to the day's itinerary.
