About Nathan Siegel
My recent work includes the development of rapidly dispatchable thermal energy storage technology, and novel approaches to extracting fresh water from atmospheric humidity. I am interested in energy and renewable fuels, in general, and currently spend a lot of time considering this question: "If you have essentially free solar electricity, but only for six hours per day, how should you use it?" I teach full time during the academic year, and enjoy developing interesting hands-on projects as an essential element of my courses. I also help other faculty to do the same with their courses. In the past I've participated in research related to proton exchange membrane fuel cells, nuclear fusion, and gas turbines.Specialties: Solar energy, Solar fuels, fuel cells, renewables, alternative energy, renewable energy, hydrogen, thermochemical, mechanical engineering, heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, energy storage, molten salt, CSP, atmospheric water harvestingMy Links:Google Scholar: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=r5J735MAAAAJ&hl=enBucknell: https://www.bucknell.edu/fac-staff/nate-siegel

Professor Of Mechanical Engineering
Current
Associate Professor Of Mechanical Engineering
Teach courses in Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, and Solar Thermal Energy Systems. Research in solar fuel production, solid oxide fuel cells, solar optics, and energy storage.
Technical Staff
I worked in the Solar Technologies Department doing R&D related to concentrating solar power (CSP). My research focus was energy storage. The specifics include thermal storage for utility scale solar electricity production (baseload power) and the production of liquid fuels, like gasoline, from carbon dioxide and water using a high temperature solar-driven.
Research Assistant
Developed and validated computational models of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs).
Adjunct Faculty
Taught various courses for the Mechanical Engineering departments at both San Diego State and Virginia Tech.
Researcher
Worked in the inertial confinement fusion (ICF) group developing computational models to support future fusion reactor design.
Intern
Performed developmental testing and analysis on advanced materials for turbine blades and combustion liners.
Intern
Worked at a pilot plant for the production of popcorn cakes. My primary responsibilities were measuring the amount of salt in the butter slurry and fixing the nacho cheese machine whenever it broke down.
