Maderas Sostenibles (MS) is a start-up company focused on developing a sustainable model integrating lumber production and silviculture (plantation forestry) in Nicaragua. Since 2008 MS has been producing hardwood lumber from trees felled naturally by hurricane Felix (2007). MS has also established plantations of various hardwood species on land that had previously been deforested for cattle raising and agriculture.As the administrative director of this new company I was responsible for designing and implementing a variety of administrative systems including accounting, inventory control, and human resources. I was also responsible for maintaining client relations and government compliance. As a partner I was involved in research and development of business models for the company.

I was stationed in the community of Mariscal Lopez outside the town of Piribebuy. I worked with local leaders to promote preventive health care such as nutrition, hygiene, and dental health. I organized and carried out small scale construction projects including wood burning stoves, latrines, protection and decontamination of water sources, and excavation of garbage pits. I also assisted community groups in planning and executing projects aimed at improving the general quality of life of the community.
