I am the Senior Director of Engineering at soona, and I am as passionate about building beautiful and meaningful applications with code as I am about growing a talented and inclusive team of developers. My highly strategic mind allows me to see the big picture, the end goal, and all the challenges that will arise throughout the processes. Formally trained as an architect, I care deeply about craft and process because they are the foundation of exceptionally designed products.Being part of a profession that not only encourages life-long learning and testing of new processes, software, and methods, but instead demands it is exceptionally important to me. I find it both meaningful and challenging to be a part of something that is fast paced with quick feedback loops from clients, users, and the product itself. Finally, making more things that get into the hands of the intended users brings me great joy as it allows me to help others improve their day-to-day lives, solve problems, and launch their dreams!I follow The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership (Dethmer, Chapman, & Klemp), and believe that strong leadership frees top talent to thrive in natural and inspiring ways. High output is my goal, and finding the unique and specific ways in which my teammates feel best supported are the most efficient and meaningful paths to achieving that goal. We're growing quickly at soona, so if you want to be a part of something special, want to develop and share your talents with exceptional teams, and are generally a great human, please reach out!

FounderRentden.Com (Side Hustle) Oct 2015 - Sep 2020I built RentDen from the ground up - including code development, UI/UX, graphic design, and marketing - to help rental property owners manage their buildings and residents. It offers them the ability to have an easy-to-use/customizable property website and user-friendly tenant portal, allowing them to streamline their communication, marketing, and even rent collection.Every feature of RentDen was designed with the rental property owner in mind. The customizable property homepage allows them to design and redesign your content at the click of a button, while the user-friendly web application organizes and simplifies communication with residents for improved unit management. RentDen simultaneously modernizes the average rental property owner's marketing ability while also increasing their building management efficiency by consolidating messaging between the owner, potential management, and the residents, sending email alerts, providing an online rent payment option, creating a place for prospective tenants to quickly access documents and forms, and more.RentDen is built on Ruby on Rails, JavaScript, and MySQL. HTML & CSS, JQuery, and APIs such as Shopify (for subscriptions), Stripe (for secure online rent transactions), and Cloudinary (image handling) help to provide a dynamic, feature-rich application. For testing, I use RSpec with Capybara, Poltergeist, and PhantomJS.

Software EngineerMinnesota Public Radio Feb 2018 - Mar 2020St Paul, Mn, UsBackend Software Engineer that works on the software applications team within the Digital Products Department of American Public Media / Minnesota Public Radio. I am involved in the development, testing, deployment, and support of software applications. While my home base is Ruby on Rails, this position also calls for development using other Web based technologies such as JavaScript, SQL, Elasticsearch, JQuery, HTML & CSS - and building APIs using either REST or GraphQL.A summary of some of my day to day tasks are as follows: Implement and maintain applications and technology that supports the operations at MPR/APM. Participate in development of system requirements for package and custom systems implementation. Work with internal customers and other developers to define requirements to improve company efficiencies. Code, test, and implement software solutions using MPR's tools and development methodologies. Ensure that department methodologies, policies, and procedures are followed on all assigned IT Projects.I was also the founder and Chair of the People of Color Employee Resource Group (PoC ERG), on the Executive Team of the Millennial Employee Resource Group (MERG), and was the Chair of the Workplace Design Group - where I wrote a proposal and did the conceptual design for an architectural renovation to our building to encourage collaboration and community within MPR. -

Software EngineerAblenet Inc. Dec 2015 - Feb 2016Roseville, Mn, UsAbleNet Inc. specializes in Special Education curriculums, hardware, and other products. They allowed me to take over and lead their first web based application, taking it from an exceptionally unstable state that was started by an outsourced team to a stable product that successfully launched its live Beta on schedule. The 'Activity Center' enables teachers, schools and districts to create/distribute practice tests and assessments to students with a variety of learning disabilities, collect specific data for analysis, and discuss the findings with parents and specialists in hopes of providing each student with the best curriculum and education possible.Upon starting, I was solely responsible for the entire code related development of the application - a true full stack engineer from database management and backend dev, through frontend production, UX/UI and design. The Activity Center is a Rails app that uses PostgreSQL, Ruby, JavaScript, AJAX, JSON, CoffeeScript, Backbone.js, and SCSS. In a very short amount of time, the application went from fragile and behind schedule to ahead of schedule as I was able to close nearly 300 tickets/issues, implement many new features from the ground up, address ideas/requests that weren't scheduled to be tackled until 1, 2 or even 3 phases later, and convince the administration that the need for testing was essential to the longevity of the product.I worked closely with the AbleNet team in charge of developing the activities and assignments in order to help the company achieve their original vision for this application. There were also daily interactions with marketing and live user testers so that I could better understand the audience and how they would interact with the app. AbleNet was able to launch the live Beta successfully on time, and while I wasn't able to accept the offer, they did end up asking me to stay full time which was not an option when I originally took the short-term position. -
