As Associate Professor of Mathematics Education (University of Reading, UK), I train Mathematics-specialist teacher trainees and conduct research into effective (and enjoyable!) mathematics teaching and learning strategies (e.g., mathematical storytelling across the age groups). Related to that, I also lead MathsThroughStories.org, a non-profit research-based initiative which organises the world's first international mathematical story writing competition for students aged 8-15 years old every Spring. (Since 2017, the website has now been viewed over 1,500,000 times by around 430,000 teachers and parents from more than 220 countries.) From 2023 to 2025, I am on secondment as an ESRC-funded Policy Fellow at the Education Endowment Foundation where I am investigating strategies to encourage early years settings, primary and secondary schools, and post-16 colleges to take part in research projects and to identify fair and cost-effective research incentives.
