Externs from all around the world were appointed to conduct location-specific research to identify a particular freshwater issue in their respective communities. Being an environmentalist from a climate-vulnerable country like Bangladesh, I conducted an in-depth research on the freshwater issues, pollution and encroachment sources, and local perspectives within the Balu River area, Dhaka. Engaging with local leaders, conservationists, and community members deepened my understanding of human impacts on freshwater conservation, helping identify crucial gaps in local conservation efforts. Additionally, the journey improved my skills in ArcGIS Storymap tools, transforming me into a more effective storyteller to connect with the community and advocate for these vital issues. Collaborating with peers and mentors, I expanded my network, connecting with fellow water conservatory enthusiasts and remarkable individuals. This two-month exploration was a testament to hard work, balancing commitments, and making every moment impactful. I am truly grateful to my mentor, Ms. Rebecca Winterringer for her 1:1 Mentorship and guidance. As the Research Assistant under the Department of Environmental Science and Management, I conducted a wet-lab Research Project titled 'Screening of garlic and betel leaf extracts for controlling bacterial pathogens of fish and shellfish', supervised by an Associate Professor at the Department of Environmental Science and Management, IUB. The main objective of this research is to identify betel leaf as an herbal dietary supplement and an alternative to toxic antibiotics in aquaculture. The… Show more As the Research Assistant under the Department of Environmental Science and Management, I conducted a wet-lab Research Project titled 'Screening of garlic and betel leaf extracts for controlling bacterial pathogens of fish and shellfish', supervised by an Associate Professor at the Department of Environmental Science and Management, IUB. The main objective of this research is to identify betel leaf as an herbal dietary supplement and an alternative to toxic antibiotics in aquaculture. The two-year-long research included routine activities including- feed preparation, siphoning, water parameter testing, maintaining elaborated data sheets, and records of daily activities while keeping our supervisor updated regularly. The findings of this research has been presented at the International Conference of Drug Discovery and Development and are currently in the process of another research publication. Show less
