About Nayana Chowdhury

A passionate development sector worker with more than two decades of experience that ranges from working with grassroots organisations to national and international grant making organisations. I have worked pan-India and traveled extensively to work with vulnerable communities including Dalits, Women, Tribes, and Particularly Vulnerable Tribe Groups. I have worked on international/ multi-country projects with focus on 5 countries in Asia and Africa.     1. Developed and strengthened the portfolio of Civil Society, Governance and Human Rights in SDTT as an independent portfolio. The disbursement under the theme had tripled during the time. The Trust had doubled the disbursement target for the portfolio within one year of flagging off the portfolio. 2. Conceptualised and developed a successful program “Empowering Rural Women” (ERW), which was implemented in 10 districts of Uttar Pradesh. It benefitted more than 100,000 women and their families by ensuring entitlements related to right to work (National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) and right to food (Public Distribution System). It worked with focus on collectivisation and leadership building among rural women. The program idea has been lauded by various external evaluators. ERW has been successfully layered with community health and agricultural development programs. Currently, the community based health program in the ERW area is one of the most successful programs of the Tata Trusts. 3. Developed program idea on “Sex Selective Elimination and Diminishing Child Sex Ratio” in India and developing projects around the same. The program reached out to 6 districts of Rajasthan and 4 districts of Haryana. Some of the current major organisations working on the issue of declining CSR were introduced to the issue by this program. 4. Made and managed grants between INR 120 million to INR 180 million in a financial year.5. Monitored an average of 65 state-specific as well as pan-Indian NGO projects.6. Engaged with the Trustees, who are mainly corporate leaders to get financial sanctions for programs as well as individual projects. 7. The responsibility included conducting sector scan, engaging with experts, working with consultants, developing program ideas including budget, developing individual proposals on the subjects of engagement and defending these in front of the Trustees.

    I started working with SRUTI from May, 1999. Took a break for 2 years in 2000. In 2002 April, rejoined and worked for 4 years in 10 states and with 35 CBOs. Supported 180 fellows from these CBOs. The responsibilities included:1. Strengthening CBOs in Eastern and Southern India towards ensuring participatory development of the marginalized communities; such as Tribals and Dalits in fields such as education, land rights, right to food and land rights.2. Process documentation of these CBO’s work over decades. 3. Strategizing with the groups to intervene in the grassroots governance to make the same accountable, transparent and participatory. Making these people’s organisations aware of social policy, planning and legal framework of the country.4. Monitoring and evaluating the work of these organisations. 5. Evaluating the training needs of the organizations and imparting as well as Organising and providing relevant training. 6. Liasoning with different Donors, INGOs, NGOs and Government departments.7. Evaluating and recommending new applicants in the fellowship programme.Other than the above,  Was instrumental to bring the SRUTI fellows together in Orissa to form a network named Orissa Jan Sangharsh Morcha (OJSM). OJSM took up advocacy in forest right and food rights related issues particularly through intervention in Governance.  Worked towards developing a course curriculum that is used for training activists working at grassroots level. This curriculum is used in series of trainings by the name of schools of activists across the country by SRUTI fellows  Co-coordinator of rehabilitation programme for the Tsunami affected people in five mandals of Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh in collaboration with NOVIB, Netherlands and SDTT, Mumbai. The work included planning for rehabilitation of the tsunami affected communities, implementation and liasoning with the district administration of Nellore. T
