Women in Science Sweden is an organisation dedicated to provide women in STEM with tools and resources to help them achieve their goals in both career and private life. Many young women lack a role model in the field of science, but we claim that there are plenty: if you want to find them! By finding good role models, we can feel a sense of belonging in the vast field of STEM!Our Mentor Program team aimed to bridge this gap by organising the WIS mentor program 2020-21 (ToGetHer We Empower), where we matched mentor-mentee pairs and hosted multiple workshops as well as events (both virtual and in-person) to make the program a success even in the midst of a global pandemic. I was also successful in getting industry sponsorship and partners on board such as Scania, ImagiLabs, SUP46 FemTech, Women Leadership Hub and others.
Social Media Curator And International Student Ambassador
My responsibilities as a Social Media Curator at KTH include using social media as an interface and a bridge between the university and students, providing useful information as well as insights into the life of a student at KTH and participating in the arrival activities for new students at KTH. It has provided me with plenty of international exposure, where I have got the chance to interact and befriend students from across the globe.
Undergraduate Student
Undergraduate ThesisMy final year project carried out a comprehensive study of the aberrant expression of miRNAs in esophageal cancer. Esophageal cancer has a high mortality rate, owing to its detection at later stages. There are limited numbers of markers available which can detect the cancer timely. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find out biomarkers, including miRNAs, which can carry out this task and also aid in personalization of therapies according to the cancer stage, type and genotype. I initially carried out the meta-analysis of all the miRNAs reported to have aberrant expression in esophageal cancer. Subsequent vote-ranking of the data obtained was carried out and the results for the 4 top ranked miRNAs were validated using quantitative real time PCR technique (qRT-PCR). Further significance of these miRNAs collectively as a diagnostic panel for esophageal cancer in combination with each other was studied as part of the project using multiple logistic regression analysis. The statistical analysis mentioned was done using the software SPSS ver 16.0. Studies with this diagnostic panel can be extended to sera samples for development of non-invasive diagnosis. In silico gene targets were also predicted for the 4 miRNAs using bioinformatic tools. I further carried out the KEGG pathway analysis to find out the biological pathways the miRNAs and their targets are involved in.
Research Intern
In July 2014, I was accepted as a summer trainee in the Cancer Genetics Unit (CGU), Advanced Centre for Training, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC), Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), Mumbai under the Principal Investigator Dr. Rajiv Sarin. I was involved in the genetic testing for HBOC. I learnt to carry out DNA extraction, PCR and different kinds of gel electrophoresis efficiently. I even learnt to perform and interpret the results of Sanger sequencing as well as RFLP. I also had an opportunity to attend Genetic Counseling of High Risk Mutation Carriers.
Research Intern
During the summer of 2013, I was appointed as an intern under Dr. Sudha Sazawal in the Hematology department at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. There, I was involved in the genetic testing of Leukemia which included techniques like DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, PAGE, flow cytometry, HPLC and studying peripheral blood smears. The process led to the detection of AML,CML and ALL. I also regularly communicated with the patients regarding their tests and progress.
