During my dissertation project, I worked with Professor David Allsop and Dr mark Taylor to find a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, my aims were:• To investigate whether a retro-inverted peptide inhibitor with the Pepc7 peptide conjugated to RI-OR2 (AC-rGffclkGrcypaststc-NH2), in eighter its circular and linear conformation was toxic to brain cell lines and if they were able to prevent the toxic effects associated with Aβ.• To determine the effects of the BHPs on the aggregation of Aβ using a thioflavin assay. • Conduct a brain penetration assay to asses, if the peptide I were able to enter neuronal cells.Techniques: Amyloid aggregation assay using thioflavin, Toxicity assays for amyloid beta and inhibitors using cultured neuroblastoma cells Microscopy tests with fluorescently labelled inhibitors High pressure liquid chromatography spectroscopy

During my BSc dissertation project, I investigated the feasibility and cost effectiveness of designing and making a DNA molecular weight ladder .This project utilised bacterial cultures “E.coli xl1 blue MRF kan competent bacteria” and Recombinant bacteria, selected recombinant cultures were used to increase the concentration of specific sized oligonucleotides. These were analysed using DNA purification techniques and restriction enzymes in conjunction with gel electrophoresis.• The aim was to design and produce a DNA molecular weight ladder that was cheaper than what it would cost to procure a commercial equivalent product.Techniques: Bacterial cell cultures, E.coli Plasmid extraction, High fidelity PCR, DNA extraction and purification, Blunt end sub cloning reactions, Ligation of DNA, Restriction digestion of plasmids, Agarose Gel electrophoresis and DNA extraction from Agarose gel
