At SimBioSys, we integrate patient-specific data and cutting edge spatially resolved biological simulations to model the behavior of cancer and predict response to therapy. I developed PK/PD models of drugs in current standard-of-care neoadjuvant treatment regimens for breast cancer to predict individual responses to therapy based on tumor perfusion and metabolism. I designed models for new drugs based on pre-clinical data and allometrically scaled to predict the idealfirst-in-human dose.I predicted the efficacy of new combination therapies which account for the mechanism of action and tumor growth characteristics. I integrated proprietary and publicly available multi-modal datasets to support model development.I managed and mentored junior scientists and interns and I provided guidance in project ideation, project management, and fostering a collaborative team environment.

Thesis: Modeling the Glycemic Response to Physical Activity and Athletic Competition Anxiety in People with Type 1 Diabetes Advisor: Ali Cinar, Ph.D.Key Research Areas:Compartmental Modeling of Influence of Exercise on Glucose-Insulin Dynamics- Combined the physiological understanding with exploratory data analysis to propose 7 feasible models of glucose-insulin dynamic models for exercise and type 1 diabetes.- Utilized skills related to structural identifiability, posterior identifiability, Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulations, global optimization techniques, and statistics.Athletic Competition Impact on Type 1 Diabetes- Conducted an observational study of recreational athletes with T1D during an athletic competition and a non-competitive exercise session.- Proposed study and study endpoints, wrote consent document, and obtained institutional review board (IRB) approval.- Managed data collection, reconciled data from multiple devices and data streams, assessed data-validity and cleaned the physiological data.- Assessed influence of competition stress on glucose-insulin dynamics and developed a model to describe the impact.

I conducted research to create a 3D model of a knee joint to allow for the optimization for bone screws and to open possibilities for personalized treatments based upon the individual bone density. In this work, I translated CT images of rabbit joints through the use of MIMICS into a 3D model in ABAQUS. A large focus was placed on properly assigning the material properties such as bone mineral density and the mechanical elastic properties.

I studied the influence of exercise on blood glucose concentrations for peope living with type 1 diabetes. I developed a model and incorporated the effects of light-intensity exercise on glucose concentrations into a previously existing Type 1 Diabetes simulator using MATLAB and Simulink. This work was presented work at the 2014 Biomedical Engineering Society Annual Meeing in 2014 in San Antonio, TX.

I led groups of new students and parents through various sessions and icebreakers aimed to educate them on the university. This helped to ease the transition and answer questions to help students and their parents adjust to college life.

In collaboration with two other students, I taught Calculus I to incoming freshman students. We wrote a syllabus, designed a condensed curriculum, created course materials (quizzes, homework, tests), and gave lectures.

I taught swimming lessons and safeguarded swimmers. I enjoyed many beautiful sunrises as I worked two mornings a week before school in my senior year.
