About Nick Bumbarger

My career journey began with a strong foundation in GIS and remote sensing. I specialized in global land cover and land change mapping, leveraging Python to automate complex processes and transform technical spatial products into accessible solutions. As I became more immersed in programming and was increasingly tasked with developing visual solutions, I recognized the growing potential of web GIS. It became evident that to fully embrace the future of GIS and geospatial science online, I needed to expand my skill set. This realization prompted my transition into the dynamic world of web development, where I could seamlessly blend and match technologies to create tailored solutions.Today, with proficiency in front-end development (React/Redux in particular), full-stack development (ArcGIS Server and many of its extensions, AWS, Node.js, opensource geoprocessing libraries, SQL, NoSQL, etc), and design using the latest JavaScript/Typescript HTML5, and CSS dialects, I'm dedicated to delivering innovative solutions that consistently exceed expectations.Recently, I've specialized in using TypeScript and React to expand, enrich, and push the boundaries of the core ArcGIS Javascript API, resulting in captivating experiences that demonstrate the full potential of geospatial technology. This represents my latest area of expertise, complementing my broader experience in various aspects of GIS and web development.I'm an active listener who collaborates closely with clients to understand their needs and translate their visions into reality. While I have experience leading projects and taking the lead on design, programming, task allocation, review, and integration, I'm equally adept at working collaboratively within a team, taking directions on challenging tasks when necessary. My versatility allows me to contribute effectively to projects in various capacities, ensuring efficient execution and successful project delivery.Let's connect and explore how my extensive experience and skills can contribute to your projects. I relish the opportunity to tackle challenging projects and am committed to delivering cutting-edge solutions.

  • Atomic Maps
    Web Application Engineer
Atomic Maps Jan 2023 - Present
In my capacity as Web Application Engineer, I led the development of an enterprise-scale geospatial decision support system, empowering one of the nation's largest data consumers to make location-based decisions regarding critical infrastructure investments. Here's a glimpse into my achievements:🔹 Front-End Design and Programming: Specialized in developing the user interface for a geospatial decision support system, combining functionality with an exceptional design to enhance the user experience.🌐 Geospatial Expertise: Utilized advanced geospatial technologies and data analysis to provide actionable insights, influencing the client's strategic decisions on establishing new data centers.🤝 Client Collaboration: Played a pivotal role in shaping the client's vision for the system's user interface. This collaborative process evolved from a general concept to a concrete, intuitive system, aligning closely with their goals.👨‍💻 Team Leadership: Led the development team, managing task allocation, guidance, and review. This leadership ensured high engagement and productivity, contributing significantly to the efficient execution and successful deployment of the project.🚀 Impactful Outcomes: The decision support system I created received enthusiastic responses from the initial team, their superiors, and progressively larger groups within the organization, indicating its potential as a key tool in the company's operational decision-making. It marked a significant step towards broadening GIS adoption within the company, successfully fulfilling the project's primary goal of evangelizing informed geospatial decision-making in their competition for physical network resources.
  • Usda
    Gis Developer
    Usda 2020 - 2021
    Washington, Dc, Us
Developed scripts and automation workflows to support the acquisition, processing, analysis, presentation, and delivery of the USDA-FPAC data catalog, including processing and fusion of all definitive elevation data sources used for agricultural output predication and risk management. Worked with the project owner to develop new workflows for incorporating multisource elevation data into the National database, using automated methods and incorporating contemporary academic research. Produced both static and interactive cartographic display and analysis products using the ArcGIS product suite as well as the ArcGIS API for JavaScript for communication with scientific and project stakeholders.
  • Blue Raster
    Application Developer
    Blue Raster 2017 - 2019
    Arlington, Va, Us
Developed advanced web mapping applications, primarily using the ArcGIS API for JavaScript and a React/Redux framework. Relied extensively on ArcGIS Online managed services including the REST API, Map and Image Servers, along with AWS integration. I often pushed the boundaries of visualization capabilities by developing bindings between the map frame and external libraries, including visualizations that extracted features into the DOM layer for better animation control, used custom layer types, and manipulated imagery in vanilla JavaScript.I was often called upon to independently develop medium-scale applications or proof of concepts to establish new business relationships and further the company’s technology stack. In my largest project- a multi-year collaboration for which I became lead developer- I communicated closely with the customer to define, style, and integrate the components that made up the application. The project was, at its core, a platform to which multiple configurable application modules could be added to support a variety of workflows. I led the development of the framework and many of the modules, while finalizing and integrating the work of my team.Beyond my core application development work, I was a member of the new-hire training team, played a large role in developing the company’s Webpack-based build system and use-case-specific boilerplate, and drew on my GIS experience to guide the data team.
  • Development Seed
    Gis Web Developer
    Development Seed 2015 - 2017
    Washington, Dc, Us
Development Seed is a web applications development company with a socially progressive mission, focussing on open source projects in areas such as Open Street Maps tooling, promotion of open and fair elections abroad, public health, remotely sensed image distribution and analysis for humanitarian efforts, and air quality monitoring. As a full-stack developer, I am involved in the planning and agile execution of projects large and small, and I enjoy creating robust, test-driven back-end software in Node.js and Python just as much as I enjoy creating exciting, deeply interactive, and beautiful front-end sites and visualizations using frameworks such as React, Redux, Jekyll, D3, and lots of Leaflet and Mapbox GL.As one of the geographers on the team, I help to develop our remote sensing strategy and capabilities, and am involved with image correction and enhancement, feature extraction, pixel-classification, statistical analysis of classified products, and cartographic data visualization.
