Developed scripts and automation workflows to support the acquisition, processing, analysis, presentation, and delivery of the USDA-FPAC data catalog, including processing and fusion of all definitive elevation data sources used for agricultural output predication and risk management. Worked with the project owner to develop new workflows for incorporating multisource elevation data into the National database, using automated methods and incorporating contemporary academic research. Produced both static and interactive cartographic display and analysis products using the ArcGIS product suite as well as the ArcGIS API for JavaScript for communication with scientific and project stakeholders.

Developed advanced web mapping applications, primarily using the ArcGIS API for JavaScript and a React/Redux framework. Relied extensively on ArcGIS Online managed services including the REST API, Map and Image Servers, along with AWS integration. I often pushed the boundaries of visualization capabilities by developing bindings between the map frame and external libraries, including visualizations that extracted features into the DOM layer for better animation control, used custom layer types, and manipulated imagery in vanilla JavaScript.I was often called upon to independently develop medium-scale applications or proof of concepts to establish new business relationships and further the company’s technology stack. In my largest project- a multi-year collaboration for which I became lead developer- I communicated closely with the customer to define, style, and integrate the components that made up the application. The project was, at its core, a platform to which multiple configurable application modules could be added to support a variety of workflows. I led the development of the framework and many of the modules, while finalizing and integrating the work of my team.Beyond my core application development work, I was a member of the new-hire training team, played a large role in developing the company’s Webpack-based build system and use-case-specific boilerplate, and drew on my GIS experience to guide the data team.

Development Seed is a web applications development company with a socially progressive mission, focussing on open source projects in areas such as Open Street Maps tooling, promotion of open and fair elections abroad, public health, remotely sensed image distribution and analysis for humanitarian efforts, and air quality monitoring.As a full-stack developer, I am involved in the planning and agile execution of projects large and small, and I enjoy creating robust, test-driven back-end software in Node.js and Python just as much as I enjoy creating exciting, deeply interactive, and beautiful front-end sites and visualizations using frameworks such as React, Redux, Jekyll, D3, and lots of Leaflet and Mapbox GL.As one of the geographers on the team, I help to develop our remote sensing strategy and capabilities, and am involved with image correction and enhancement, feature extraction, pixel-classification, statistical analysis of classified products, and cartographic data visualization.

Responsible for prototyping, procedure development, and scripting/process automation in two primary areas: global land-cover classification and global change detection.Contributed to the holistic geospatial production lifecycle, including methodology and operating procedure development, analyst training, validation and delivery, design of cartographic deliverables and customer support.Developed original software to automate processes and streamline workflows involving the manipulation of literally every Landsat image ever captured, dramatically improving production efficiency.Programmatically produced custom GIS products including ArcGIS analysis extensions, KML datasets, web maps, and products derived through data mining/ web scraping.

Developed land-cover classification methodology to examine ecosystem-level response to forest disturbance. Codified, merged, and interpreted disparate field observation datasets for use in algorithm training and map validation. Communicated with researchers in the field to rapidly incorporate new information and generate map products and figures on demand. Overall mapping strategy synthesized decision tree, spectral unmixing, and artificial neural network data mining algorithms.

Collaborated with Principal Investigator (PI) to establish long-term, multi-temporal forest monitoring program funded by the NSF. Trained team of 9 undergraduate students in use of remote sensing techniques and oversaw production of remotely-sensed forest inventory and change maps using methodology developed by myself, my co-managers and the PI. Other responsibilities included planning and leading students through two weeks of field data collection, validation and statistical analysis of map products, publication of results, and mentoring students in their independent research projects for presentation at the Annual Meetings of the Association of American Geographers (AAG).
