FoodAssist is one of the many growing sustainable organizations at the University. The main objective of FoodAssist is to create a lasting impact of food insecurity in Charlottesville. While we hope to expand our efforts throughout the town, our focus lies within the university- we are trying to reduce food waste on grounds. A couple of times a week, a team member and I go to sororities to pick up leftover catered meals that will then be delivered to local organizations such as Computers4Kids. Collectively, we have picked up and distributed around 70 meals, which approximates to about 300 dollars’ worth of food that would have been thrown away. In terms of outreach, I have initiated several phone calls with potential donation recipients such as local shelters, halfway houses, and other non-profit groups. I am currently working on creating a better platform to organize volunteer requests and donations.

Conducted research with Assistant Professor Laura Barnes on Sensus, an end-to-end system for mobile sensing. I helped develop a web-based platform for researchers to use when conducting studies.

Being a part of the Student Engagement Council gave me a lot of experience within areas including marketing, outreach, and creative strategy (advertising). The first project that the council and I helped build was the “Have You Seen Kootz?” campaign. To raise awareness of the Kootz exhibition, we made t-shirts and buttons to wear around grounds so that more people would be inclined to visit the museum. The public awareness campaign has been the most memorable experience so far. I helped craft the idea of there being bull tracks (the bull being the mascot of the museum) all over grounds and Charlottesville leading individuals to the museum. This idea then extended to the formation of life-sized bull rhytons- an object in the museum.

With SEED, I got the opportunity to work with four non-profit organizations: EcoArt Project, CrediLikeMe/KobraRed, PureMadi, and Back on My Feet. While working with the EcoArt Project, I helped design and create a sponsorship packet draft for potential sponsors such as Looptworks, Convanta, and AK Steel in an effort to expand and fund for a global art competition. For CrediLikeMe/KobraRed, I investigated competitive forces and legal regulations in Latin American countries to determine whether a platform business model or a SaaS business model would best suit KobraRed’s business. More recently, I assessed Back On My Feet's facility partnerships in D.C., Los Angeles, and San Francisco. The data compiled consisted of the attendance rate, employment conversion rate, and the housing conversion rate for each facility.
