About Nicolas Castro

I am a Graduate Student Researcher in Biohybrid Robotics the at MIT, with the honor of working in the lab of Professor Ritu Raman within the Department of Mechanical Engineering.As an aspiring biomedical and robotics engineer, I have experience working with mechanical, electrical, and software systems. Throughout my professional and educational careers, I have led and supported teams in developing engineering projects ranging from a rudimentary haptic feedback device for upper limb prosthetics, to a combat robot built for BattleBots style competition. In my free time though, I enjoy going running and writing stories. I always enjoy meeting new people and listening to their unique perspectives. In the RoboMed Lab, I have worked to create the back-end of a robotic guidewire for vascular insertion. More work is still yet to come, but it has been a pleasure gaining experience so far in a robotics R&D environment.

During my time here, I was able to implement biweekly roundtable meetings to increase team communication, while also keep our teams moving forward. I was also able to organize the first BattleBots competition on Georgia Tech Campus during the RoboJackets 20th Anniversary Celebration, where highschoolers and university teams competed alike.

    As an intern in the Hahn Lab, I worked to understand the inflammatory response produced by macrophages. By understanding and learning more about this process, we can better suit devices for bodily implantation. During my internship I worked on an independent project within the NSF-funded RPI REU. My research on characterizing the inflammatory profiles of macrophages not only helped me develop strong laboratory skills, but was also chosen for an oral presentation at the 2017 BMES Annual Meeting. It was a pleasure to present my research in person to the scientific community.
