Leadership, oversight and support for North Carolina’s 1.52 million students, 100,000 teachers, and 5,400 school administrators. Devised and executed a public-facing statewide strategic plan consisting of policy goals and human capital solutions to improve student outcomes for all. Restructured organization to provide equitable support to all districts. Leveraged federal ARP dollars to create a first-of-its-kind research arm of the NC DPI. Reports included a first-in-the-nation rigorous population study focused on measuring the impacts of the pandemic on public school students. Direct engagement and data-sharing with public school district leadership resulted in statewide academic recovery for 3 consecutive years of post-pandemic achievement gains in virtually every subject in every grade. Oversaw implementation of comprehensive literacy legislation (Excellent Public Schools Act, SB 387, 2021), including the completion of science of reading-aligned professional development for 44,000 educators statewide resulting in K-3 literacy gains higher than national average for three consecutive years and double-digit gains across all student subgroups. Championed grassroots, statewide initiative to ensure all students have the skills to be employed, enlisted, or enrolled upon high school graduation. North Carolina's Portrait of Graduate provides seven durable skills that when combined with academic coursework prepares all students to be successful in the post-secondary plans of their choice. Achieved 89% increase in student credential attainment. Competitive grant awards totaled more than $72,702,450, all aligned to the strategic vision I set forth for public education in North Carolina.
