I am Managing Partner and Founder of Mavovo Capital, which is part of the Capitalworks group. Mavovo enables asset owners to invest sustainably in private markets in South Africa by emphasizing both impact and risk-adjusted returns, while overcoming the limitations of their governance budget. Mavovo, which is majority-owned and led by black South African investment professionals, invests directly in Real Assets (i.e., infrastructure and real estate) and also provides diversified access to top-rated primary PE strategies that include Co-investments and Secondaries opportunities. Until 28 February 2022, I was Chief Investment Officer of the Eskom Pension and Provident Fund (EPPF) managing a team of 22 professionals and circa $11.5 billion (R180 billion) assets and a funding ratio of 145%. EPPF is the second largest pension fund in South Africa. I have been involved in the financial services industry for more than 25 years, starting in the actuarial field and then moving on to the asset management industry, and pension fund investments. I drew on my broad experience across the major asset classes, which I garnered while working for investment firms like Coronation Fund Managers, STANLIB, and Prudential (M&G Investments).My leadership experiences have been shaped by: > founding of the Asset Owners Forum South Africa (representing 12 pension funds with total combined assets greater than R2.5 trillion);> being a member of the Infrastructure Investment Committee that advised the R100 billion SA government’s Infrastructure Fund;> chairing boards of JSE-listed companies and private companies; and> Leading and managing teams in both large and entrepreneurial organizations.I have chaired the Audit & Risk Committee of the JSE-listed Fairvest Property Holdings until I became chairman of the Board in 2022. I am chairman of the Board of IG Markets South Africa, an OTC derivatives provider and online trading platform. I am an independent non-executive director of Equites Property Fund Limited, the only logistics-focused REIT on the JSE.I hold both the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designations. I have completed an Investment Management Workshop at the Harvard Business School, Advances in Asset Allocation course with EDHEC-Risk Institute, certificates of competence in Executive Transformational Leadership Development as well as Managing and Leading People at the Wits Business School. I also completed the Property Development Programme at the UCT Graduate School of Business.
