As a student of The GREEN Program, I had the opportunity to travel around Costa Rica and explore the countries diverse sources of renewable energy. Our group had classes every morning and we would learn about each renewable energy source and the ways that each had been implemented and utilized by the country. We were taken to see five different renewable energy resources and we were able to take an in-depth look at the way each facility was operated. These five facilities included Geothermal, Hydro electric, Wind, Solar-power, and Bio-fuel. We also had a chance to build rain water collection systems for the poverty stricken locals, so they could have clean drinking water. In the last days of our trip we were asked to create a capstone project that would relate to sustainability. Our project focused on developing a house concept that would be self-sustaining and built from mostly renewable and recycled resources. We then researched different regions that our concept could be implemented, in order to determine the feasibility. This capstone project was then presented to an audience of students, locals, and GREEN Program employees.
