I am a product leader specializing in software, machine learning/AI and human-centered design. I have close to 14 years of industry experience at Google and Amazon, spanning a range of technical, operational responsibilities and C-Level assignments. Along the way, I entered doctoral candidacy in Computational Sociology at the University of Chicago. I use applied machine learning to address problems in the domain of social science and neurology, bringing technical and scientific depth to understanding customer needs. For more than a decade, I’ve translated that depth into many products from early-stage concepts to public launches and “moonshots.” I am accustomed to delivering on intense timelines with both small, tactical teams and large, multi-stakeholder organizations. As a founding member of Google Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) in 2012, I drove digital transition efforts at Motorola with an NLP solution to measure feedback from consumer websites, organize by topic, and deliver insights to Product Quality teams. In 2014, I founded a team to build “Google EQ." EQ captured human emotional trends associated with any Google search topic & traced them back to public conversations and user demographics. When I left Google in 2017, EQ’s Beta program secured close to $50 million in sales partner commitments. I gained valuable first-hand experience presenting to Executive audiences including luminaries like Eric Schmidt, Jonathan Rosenberg, Lorraine Twohill, Vint Cerf, Jim Messina and more. In 2017, I joined Grand Challenge, Amazon’s “moonshot” organization for incubating new ideas & tech aimed at making a positive impact in the world. I took on the global epidemic of loneliness & social isolation, gathering leading scientific minds and launching four prototype social-media based interventions. From these, we created “PhyCon” a platform to restore spontaneity & hallway conversations to virtual office life. In March 2022, I went on sabbatical to recharge and do creative work. I am nearing completion on a statistics textbook for Ideapress Publishing, founded a consultancy, and am currently producing a graphic novel about Seattle’s local history. As a thought leader, I’ve worked to collapse the boundaries between qualitative and quantitative data with machine learning, culminating in an influential paper published in The Handbook of Anthropology in Business (2014). I’ve given talks on data science, AI, research & management at Boston College, Savannah College of Art and Design, Stanford, Fordham, IBM, Frog Design, Airbus & many conferences.
