I've never had a boss (except my clients, I guess). SBA loans paved my path to success. My timeline:High School: Learned to read a P&L from my CPA dad and started DJing family events with $2,500 he lent me.College: DJed through college, paid off dad's loan (with interest!), and started a web-hosting company with my roommate using the DJ earnings. Graduated with a BS in Comp Sci but chose entrepreneurship.SBA Loan #1: Constructed, operated, and shut down my first QSR (Saladworks) within 8 months, borrowing over $300,000 from family to pay off the SBA loan.SBA Loan #2: Bought, improved, and sold a Dunkin Donuts within 2 years, making $400,000 and thankfully repaying my family loan.SBA Loan #3: Constructed, operated, and sold a Houlihan’s, BARELY breaking even after 2 years, but gained my "Street MBA" by this point.SBA Loan #4: Bought and operated a sports bar and liquor store, learned from the past failures and finally achieved $100K+ annual cash flow. Sold it 10 years later.From the liquor store counter, my partner and I transitioned from business brokers (fail) to SBA loan brokers (some success) and eventually found our niche as business appraisers. Over 13 years, we built Reliant Business Valuation into the largest, most successful SBA business valuation firm in the nation.SBA Loans #5-7: Built three Wingstop locations in NJ starting in 2017, after recognizing their high sales per square foot while valuing a Wingstop territory for an SBA lender.Launched Valzy in 2019, a web-based internal valuation tool for SBA lenders needing quick, accurate valuations.Built LendUX in 2021 as a spin-off of ApplyforPPP.com, which facilitated over 14,000 PPP loans worth over $900 million for community banks.Sold Reliant Business Valuation in 2023 to a private equity-backed national business valuation firm, which continues to lead the industry with its original staff and culture.Obtained a Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA) designation in 2024 while taking a break, getting ready for my next phase of entrepreneurship!
