CurrentThe Discovery Foundation was born out of the Dili-based business, East Timor Trading Group, which my husband Sakib and I started 25 years ago. Sakib and I were born in Karachi, Pakistan and both our families have a strong tradition of supporting education. Our parents encouraged us to study and we have done the same for our three children. The Discovery Foundation formalises our desire to provide access to education to those for whom it would otherwise remain inaccessible. As a secondary focus, the Foundation helps to provide access to clean water because this basic resource is often unavailable in areas like Pakistan’s arid Sindh Province.In Timor-Leste and Pakistan, the Foundation has seen education lift families out of poverty and empower women to achieve dreams that would have otherwise been unattainable. Those dreams may be as personal as having the means to raise a healthy child in a safe environment or professional, such as embarking on a career or study.
