Designated.health is joining the fight against healthcare disparities by enabling virtual care solutions for vulnerable communities, accounting for their unique obstacles and the many opportunities to improve the care for those that are often overlooked. Given the impact of COVID-19 on vulnerable communities, designated.health has the opportunity to provide a crucial and cost-effective healthcare solution at a time of acute need, while also testing and validating a longer-term tool for high-quality remote healthcare delivery.The heart and soul of designated.health are our medical volunteers; our volunteering model focuses on convenient incremental contributions that fit into busy schedules and are supported by technology. Unlike a 15-minute urgent care visit or 60-90 minute emergency room (ER) visit for a patient with mild COVID-19 symptoms, the designated.health encounter begins with an online or over-the-phone self-check assessment, followed by a free online visit with a volunteer physician. Over the subsequent 14 days, patients receive daily education, requests for biometric data (i.e. temperature, respiratory rate, etc.), and questionnaires to screen for food insecurity, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. The patient’s entire community will benefit from protecting local primary care and the reduced community exposure by a COVID-19 patient who is appropriately managed and quarantined at home rather than traveling to the ER.
