About Neil Cattermole

I have recently retired from West Midlands Police, having served in a number of departments and roles. I started my police career in the Ministry of Defence Police where I served as armed Police Officer for 3 years between 1990 and 1993.I transferred to West Midlands Police and had a break in service between July 1994 and November 1995 as I took a role as an Insurance Fraud Investigator for a company based in Essex. I was trained in surveillance techniques by ex-Met Police Regional Crime Squad and completed a number of investigations (both interviews/ statements and surveillance when appropriate. These investigations and claim challenges resulted in a number of fraudulent cases being identified. In 1995, I returned to West Midlands Police in 1995 and continued as a Police Officer and qualified Tutor Constable. Between 2004 and 2010, I qualified to Sergeant and completed several management modules and courses to allow me to supervise Command & Control staff. I was also trained in Firearms and surveillance, completing a number of cases involving surveillance.I supervised Response teams, a Command & Control Department ( obtaining an accolade for ‘Best Performing C & C Team’) and a Professional Development Department, being responsible for the training of student officers and those with development requirements. I obtained an ‘A1’ Assessor qualification.Between 2011 and 2012 I was the Local Strategic Lead for Youth Engagement. In 2012 I returned to the Investigations Team (now referred to a CID).Since 2012, I have either supervised/ trained or undertook numerous investigations covering a vast array of criminal activity, from simple theft related offences to armed robbery, large drugs seizures even murder. This involved obtaining and completing statements, actioning warrants, handling evidence (physical and digital) interviewing suspects and witnesses; liaising with CPS, Barristers; court attendance and presenting evidence to court. In 2017, I became a Digital Media Investigator (qualified) and have extracted data from thousands of devices, completing the analysis of the data; collation of information and completion of evidential products. I have obtained data as a result of hundreds of applications for communication data under RIPA; IPA; DPA and court orders, all of which have required a number of hours of analysis and the completion of case papers and evidential products. I am familiar with ISO 17025, ACPO Guidance on Digital Evidence, PACE, POCA etc. I am IT literate, having daily use of the MS OFFICE SUITE, video capture and editing functions.

I have completed 30 years in the Police service. My last post was in Force CID as an investigator. I have specialised for the last 4 years as a Digital Media Investigator (accredited), examining, collating & analysing all aspects of digitally captured evidence and producing evidential products, assisting in countless high-profile investigations. My first 3 years in the police service was for the Ministry of Defence Police (1990 to 1993), during which I served as a firearms officer. I moved to West Midlands Police in 1993. Between 1993 and 1994 I had a break in service and worked as an Insurance Fraud Investigator for Vincent Sherman Associates, a company based in Essex covering England & Wales. My role involved collation & analysis of information pertaining to insurance claims, surveillance of suspects and general enquiries to prevent fraud, identify offenders and support convictions.I returned to West Midlands Police and completed a number of years covering all aspects of policing. I obtained my promotion qualification and completed several years running a collection of teams including the Professional Development Unit dedicated to training student officers and addressing performance issues; Neighbourhood Police Team; Response teams and a Control Room. I was also the Youth Engagement Officer working within the Partnerships Office during which I was the strategic lead for youth engagement for the police in Sandwell. I am also an A1 Assessor.I returned to the crime investigation arena in 2012 and have completed 9 years within Force CID as an investigator. Above is a short description of the last 30 years. Obviously, there is a great deal more information that is not written here. Skills acquired as a police officer would include: leadership; teamworking; written skills; IT skills; communication skills; conflict awareness and management; personal safety; discipline; interviewing etc.I am now seeking a new challenge and look forward to the next 12 months.
