My role centres around taking charge of a team of sailors on the Bridge of a warship with the aim of keeping the ship safe in all respects whilst at sea and making sure that whole ship operations are being conducted as planned. Outside of this core role I am expected to undertake secondary duties that vary from role to role. Some of these duties include acting as the Health and Safety Supervisor for the ship or as the Gunnery Officer taking charge of the development and employment of a ship's gunnery crew in the defence of the ship.

I was responsible for the development of the university's rowing club, which involved monitoring a team of coaches who managed the less advanced crews whilst I focused on the day to day management of the Men's and Women's A crews. This role included programme design, recruitment and fund sourcing.

Whilst undertaking this role, I was responsible for coaching the U16 team and then the U19 B crews. As the U16 coach I worked within a prescribed programme as a technical coach and was given the flexibility to modify the programme as required by the athletes depending on their performance. I was then given the freedom to plan the programme for the U19 B team in the latter stages of the role.

I volunteered as a rowing coach at LYR whilst also rowing for the organisation. I mainly coached on Learn 2 Row schemes, where people in disadvantaged areas were given the opportunity to try the sport as it is usually inaccessible to juniors in these areas. I occasionally spent time understudying the Head Coach coaching some of the more advanced crews for my own development and experience.
