To put it briefly, the point of any EDO (Economic Development Organization) is to attract corporate clients and then ensure they continue doing business. Some obvious benefits to this are job creation and contributing to The City's commercial tax base. When a company's product or service is exportable, it's even better. That is, their revenue is not simply a reconfigure or redistribution of funds already within The City or province, but rather represents funds that were not there before.A successful EDO relies on many things to ensure its success, including soliciting and servicing companies, maintaining directories, attracting labour, site selection, producing sector reports, authoring promotional documents, and communicating through social media and newsletters. Indeed, it is a multi-dimensional sort of beast.Soliciting and servicing is probably the first thing that comes to most people's minds when they think of an EDO, and for good reason. After all, that is what causes individuals and companies to come and stay. However, those actions must be backed by directories, numbers, and tools.EDO's are inundated with numbers and it does not take long before you find your materials out-of-date. These numbers come from all levels (City up to Nationwide) and on a monthly basis. Not only must they remain organized, but they also must be presented in a clear and tidy way. Of all the things I mentioned, data collection and presentation is the most important, though not overwhelmingly so. A successful EDO balances brisk solicitation with diligent sorting, writing, and organization behind the scenes.

Analytics and numbers have value in a business. Given the technological age, the collection, storage, manipulation, and interpretation of data has become cost-effective and valuable. Through the use of programming languages, mathematics, and visualization tools, data can steer marketing and sales decisions through quantitative analysis.I have studied and worked on many subjects through school, work, and hobbies. Despite the variety, something common to them all has been data analysis. It's insufficient to simply collect and display data from some program. Whether science or sales, those numbers tell a story. Extracting that story is the principal duty of a data analyst.In Going On's case, the important numbers involve the website (goingon.ca) as well as social media accounts (its own plus that of clients). The effectiveness of content, contests, posts, etc. can all be measured quantitatively through the use of analytic tools (Google Analytics, Facebook Insights, AgoraPulse, etc.).

I was responsible for all office-related matters with a particular focus on bookkeeping, invoicing, and preparing financial statements. Other duties included organizing meetings, handling accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and communicating with several external parties (law offices, accountants, landlords, banks, insurance agents, etc.).In addition, I also participated in various programming projects and was a significant contributor to the Physical Computing Program at Three Oaks Senior High School.

Electric utilities monitor electrical loads, but rarely are they able to react to the activities and habits of its users. Typically, electrical loads have a diurnal trend with the minimum being around 4:00 A.M. and the maximum being around supper time. A pronounced peak is problematic for the utility. This is because the infrastructure must be designed to handle this peak demand, even if it's only for a small piece of the day; not doing so would cause equipment failure and blackouts.The idea behind the City's "Smart Grid" is to automate certain processes so that they take place during off-peak hours instead of burdening the infrastructure during the day. In the City's case, these processes are home heating and domestic hot water.Through a program called Heat For Less, the City offers Electrical Thermal Storage (ETS) devices to its residents. These devices require electricity to charge them. Ordinarily, the device would decide when to draw power from the utility. Instead of that, a software program could automate this charging to take place during the night so that the devices would be fully charged when people wake, thereby evening out the load. Of course, should someone require charging during the day (due to heavy use), they would receive it. I was hired to assist in the development of this software.My job was to design and implement software that allowed the utility to group devices into different charging routines. By archiving and analysing device data, the program would decide when to charge these devices and how intensely.The term "Smart Grid" is broad. I've talked about software and devices here, but there are other pillars to the project as well, including smart meters, the windmills, and the fiber network. Indeed, I found myself on the periphery of all these things during my time with the City.

Summerside Tennis was an idea hatched by myself and Brian Hall, Executive Director of Tennis PEI. By offering lessons to juniors and adults at Credit Union Place in Summerside, we would establish a presence of Tennis PEI in Prince County. In May 2012, I obtained my certification as a Tennis Canada Instructor and began teaching in the middle of June.Brian helped getting things going, such as promotional efforts and registration. In terms of doing the actual teaching and handling finances, I was a one-man-show. Lessons were one hour long and took place on Mondays and Wednesdays. Registration was good with 40-50 participants during the entire summer. However, due to personal reasons, I could not continue my involvement into the following years.

I have held dozens of teaching assistantships during my academic life. These involved assisting in the laboratory, giving tutorials, or marking assignments. Teaching can offer some balance to being a student yourself. It's easy to forget just how well you know certain things when you keep it to yourself. Not only is teaching rewarding but the hourly wage can supplement your stipend quite nicely.Most of my teaching duties have been for first or second year courses. New students tend to be delicate, and if you're not gentle enough, you can cause tears. Those that don't have patience for such a thing usually migrate toward the senior-level courses.
