My work for the past several years is in management consulting. That’s a pretty broad brush. It seems useful here to talk about what I actually do when I’m working. The core is that in most contracts my job is to bring people together and help them to engage in “Profitable Talk”. Sometimes that means facilitating strategic planning. Sometimes about implementing those plans. Other times I bring customers or users or other stakeholders together. Help people identity needs and problems and strengths too. Sometimes my initial role is research or needs analysis, finding what all those people need to talk about. Recently the biggest demand has been for evaluation of quite large training and employment projects. We work to determine what to measure and then do so via both quantitative and qualitative tools. Change and improvement result. In the end, however lengthy the report and however many charts and graphs are in it, what has happened is that people listened to each other. My team and I help them do that.

  Some Key Experiences Trades Training #1 - Evaluated over three years a multi-million dollar project to help First Nation people become qualified in carpentry, electricity and plumbing. There was no known precedent re how to do this. We helped the leadership identify numerous ways to improve their impact. Health Care - Helping an ad hoc group of health care providers to come together and identify what they could do together that they couldn’t do singly. The target issue was Hepatitis-C Virus. Research For the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) and Railroad Association of Canada (RAC) - Developed guidelines to improve recruitment and retention of First Nation employees. Policing - Worked for Thunder Bay Police and partner organizations to help TBay Police respond to perceived racial profiling. A two-year project with positive results. Needs Assessments - Human Service and Justice Coordinating Committee, Kinloch Manor Hospice, Shelter House and the Children’s Centre (formerly the LRFC).
