About Neil Smith
In furthering my volunteer work I am now a Visiting Fellow at the ANU, I currently teach regulation and regulatory theory (including prudential regulation), the Australian Criminal Justice System, Criminology, and Policing. I also lead research into missing persons.I am currently Board Member (elected) on the Rowing ACT board, the Rowing ACT representative on the Rowing Australia Masters Commission and volunteer company Secretary for the Canberra Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation. In 2021, I finished a second stint working with the Commonwealth Department of the Treasury on the regulation of Foreign Investment in Australia during which time I was award a Secretary's Award from Dr Kennedy, Secretary of the Treasury for professional, resilient collaboration across Treasury and the Australian Public Service.In my public service career I developed an expertise in the prudential regulation of private health insurance, life insurance and general insurance. Including as Special Counsel of the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority and General Counsel of the then Private Health Insurance Administration Council. I have significant experience in corporate governance and regulation (prudential regulation), administrative law, constitutional law and statutory interpretation and drafting.I also enjoy volunteering and seeking to help those in need. Including as a mentor and as a rowing coach (juniors, masters, high performance and those with special needs), I think it fundamentally important to give and I enjoy working with people who have special needs and need time and care.I am a family man, sportsman, career public service and lawyer, coach, sports administrator, lover of books, believer in community and society and gardener who believes in giving time and care.
