About Neil Bertelsen

We stand at a defining point in the provision of healthcare across the globe. Government agencies, patient organisations, the industry and the research community are working closer together to tackle the issue of how we can afford future healthcare and meet the expectations and values of patients. We need a new type of approach to meet this challenge. One perspective is not enough. I began my journey as a patient advocate at a time before we had systems to assess access and reimbursement of medicines (Health Technology Assessments - HTA). I took those learnings and insights into my work as a consultant in the fields of global healthcare strategies, patient access, HTA policy, scientific and patient communications, advocacy relations and patient insight research, allowing me to bring a unique set of perspectives together. Questions that are increasingly coming to the fore will need a coordinated response: How do we ensure that there is genuine patient involvement in all stages of medicine development, approval and access? How do we bring all stakeholders together to work on completely new approaches to medicine approval and patient access? What does value really mean to a patient? How can we bring regulatory bodies and HTA bodies closer together to develop joint solutions faster? These are just a few of the issues that need a concerted and collaborative approach. Through my work I design and implement programmes that bring together people who are passionate about these kinds of questions to build credible responses to these issues. My voluntary work includes being past chair of the Health Technology Assessment International (HTAi) Patient and Citizen Involvement Group, where I am still an active member of the steering committee. This is a group of international experts, including patient organisations, HTA bodies, researchers and industry members that are determined to enable a future where patient and citizen involvement in the healthcare reimbursement decisions becomes the norm, not the exception. I am also a board member of PFMD (Patient Focused Medicine Development), where the focus is on working collaboratively internationally, across multiple stakeholders to make patient engagement in medicines a sustainable reality. Previously, I have been board member of the Terrence Higgins Trust, Europe's largest HIV and sexual health advocacy group, and before that I was editor of Positive Times, the UK's first national publication for people with HIV.

Listed skills include Market Access, Business Strategy, Virology, Portfolio Strategy, and 29 others.
