The role included: -- Designing 1U (and up to 4U) 19” racking computer systems using sheet metal and metal machined parts. Consideration was given to the unit’s ruggedness and what environment the computer was to be installed in. - I also worked closely with the fabricators to ensure components were manufactured cost effectively through good efficient design.- The role involved working with the production "Integration Build Teams", improving system builds through efficient assembly and better design.- I also revised the companies ECO process, with better revision & document control between design, production and suppliers. - As well as working on existing systems, I also provided concepts for new projects - presenting the designs for new tenders too.- During this contract, Solid Edge 3D/2D and Keyshot rendering packages were used.

New designed parts include mouldings, castings and machined items.- Several visits working in Shenzhen (China) for two weeks at a time at suppliers, trialingnew parts (T0, T1 and T2 tool trials) and setting up initial production assembly.- Working solely on smaller instrument projects for the R & D manager.- Being involved and participating in testing the new sonar products – including internalenvironmental testing (test chambers etc.) and open water trials.

Working as the lead designer on EPIRB floating GPS 406 safety devices. Tasks at McMurdo include:-Designing multi-varying EPIRB concepts, and taking selected design(s) through development to production for various EPIRB class markets.Leading key stage presentations to department teams and management using SolidWorks, Using Photoworks and Photoshop to present ideas and development.Combining the electronics teams input and requirements into the mechanical design.Prototyping to support development of the product – primarily using the in house Objet 30 3D printer, and tradition RP techniques such as SLS and PU casting. These prototypes were then tested in various environments – water (for buoyancy testing) and heated / cold chambers.Designing within marine and safety regulations, including RTCM and IEC, and type approval requirements and bodies.Liaising with toolmakers and moulders (both in the UK and China) and other key suppliers.

Designing within a small engineering team on Airbus A400M aircraft loading simulators.Structural design using Solidworks Members and Framing on dynamic simulators 18m long and 4m wide and 4m high.The simulators were designed from initial proposals presented to the MOD right through to development for three hangers at RAF Brize Norton.The simulators involved working with hydraulics, welding, and beams, and floor loading modifications that the RAF hangers had to undergo to house the heavy simulators for the RAF and Army to train on.The design worked on had to “kneel” down to the floor and up again, and had to have a functional ramp to take 10 tonnes whilst moving from down on the floor, to horizontal, to fully closed.
