Radio Operator On Oberon Class Submarines

Hms Dolphin

I was stationed at HMS Dolphin for a total of 6 years and 11 months, during which time I served on a total of 3 submarines.HMSM Opportune - 1 YearHMSM Onyx - 2 Years 4 monthsHMSM Opossum - 3 MonthsI reached the level of First Class Radio Operator on Submarines being both competent in the operation and some basic technical competence at setting up and using communication equipment used within the Submarine service and communications centre ashore. I did not attempt my leadership level as my intention was to move into engineering instead and become an artificer working in between the Weapons Engineering Officer and Senior Ratings on board submarine's. My work would then have included work on all the electronic side of radio and audio equipment instead of simply the operational side.Unfortunately, the defence cutbacks in 1993, meant my career was cut short and I was made redundant from the Navy. I did however use this opportunity to move into engineering after all.

Jan 1987 - Dec 1993

Radio Operator In Training

Royal Navy

Hms Raleigh & Hms Mercury

My first couple of months in training for the Royal Navy. I was selected to be part of the submarine service while under training as I had reached the Top of my class for all training requirements. Before the days of PC's and IT infrastructure this company supplied basic office equipment to a wide selection of customers in the Torbay Riviera. We supplied Silver Reed typewriters which we also repaired, as well as the old Golf ball typewriters and even the older manual typewriters as well. In addition we also used to take in dictation machines and telephone answering machines and the occasional photocopier and reproduction machine as well. This was a wonderful company to work for and a great bunch of work colleagues to enjoy working with. A company I will never forget.

1985 - Feb 1986

Junior Field Service Technician

This position was a follow on from a work placement with the Youth Training Scheme as it was called back then.I was initially involved with assisting in fault finding and repairing of the Canon range of typewriters before moving across to repairing and servicing of dictation equipment. which was a sideline for our base in Exeter. I built up a good foundation of customers through Canon, and learnt the early tricks of customer support.
