About Dr Neil Caton
Welcome to my LinkedIn page! I’m Neil and I hold a PhD in Psychological Science from The University of Queensland, under the principal supervision of leading social psychologist Professor William (Bill) von Hippel. My research has spanned mental health and relationship communication to sports success and dating prowess, revealing my long and deep passion for blending behavioural insights with data-driven expertise. In particular, my doctoral research sought to uncover the ancient reasons for our first impressions: What makes a person look successful? What makes a person look like a leader? Does a person’s physical looks indicate how much money they’ll make, how fast they’ll climb the career ladder, or whether they’ll be elected to the senate? Are our instantaneous impressions of others guided by an ancient psychological system that serves a deep, underlying function?By leading a team of over a dozen researchers, my research addressed a leading explanation for this phenomenon called ‘impression formation’ – “Why do we form impressions of others?” – and found that the human mind can directly perceive how certain anatomical features are associated with the actual capacity to inflict damage. I presented this research at leading international conferences, published in renowned peer-reviewed journals, and my dissertation was awarded the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Thesis for making an outstanding contribution to psychological science. All these behavioural insights were answered using advanced analyses in R, Python, SPSS, Jamovi, and Excel, including advanced regression, multi-level, and structural equation models, geometric morphometrics, qualitative analyses, and automated object recognition algorithms. One manuscript involved coding, within three hours, several thousand lines of code in Python to then automatically retrieve, within 10 minutes, the facial features of almost one thousand professional combatants. In another case, I created a 300,000+ word document with over 3,000 company-formatted tables of advanced inferential statistical analyses within four days. My vast statistical toolkit allows me to rapidly run analyses and yield instant and cost-efficient insights into human behaviour, and my experience in teaching behavioural science allows for the revelation of these insights to those with no prior knowledge of this far-reaching and fantastic field.
