Over the 20-plus years I have spent in the Washington, DC, area, I have pursued a double career--one as an economist and demographer focusing on America's ability to invest in its future, and the other as a historian and sociologist looking at how generational differences shape attitudes, behaviors, and the course of history.My first career has resulted in many important publications, several of them in collaboration with Peter G. Peterson (now retired from Blackstone) and with Richard Jackson (at CSIS).Yet over time my second career has come to dominate a growing share of my work life. Back in the late 1980s, Bill Strauss and I partnered to write "Generations" (published in 1991)--which embodied a new way of looking at history that practically compelled us to write further books to explore its full implications. We forecasted the rising "Millennial" generation, and later wrote much more about how Millennials would change schools, colleges, the military, politics, and the workplace. We also predicted that the 2000-2010 decade would usher in a darker and more urgent mood in American history, a shift we dubbed (in 1997) as America's "Fourth Turning."I am currently advising clients how to energize Millennials (and older generations) as workers and how to target them as consumers of products, services, and media. I am also researching some cutting-edge tools to help government and business leaders navigate the serious economic, political, and foreign policy challenges our country faces over the coming decade.
