I am interested in building systems that work despite their many moving parts, systems that can be relied upon even as the needs and scale grow, and systems that can help alleviate the weight of running a modern operations environment. One of the most critical aspects of this is the assurance that systems, tools, and documentation are designed with their operators in mind. I'm best at building systems that make automation, security, monitoring, and documentation easier, because those are all the tools targeted at making the traditional operations role work smoothly.Whenever a process gets in the way of accomplishing a goal or helping a customer, I want to work on automating that process to make sure it goes smoother next time. I consider "clever solutions" a drawback because of the way they encode tribal knowledge in the operation of a system. I will work to make sure the clever parts are minimized as much as possible so that the operation of the system is clear for whoever has to work on it six months after its deployed. I have decades of operational experience, and I'm interested in being more focused on software development and cloud architecture in the next steps of my career.I'm also always interested in encouraging healthy workplace practices that show a company really values its employees' time. I believe a company should respect the fact that different people work differently, prefer different environments or schedules, etc. I believe work should be managed by setting clear expectations rather than demanding specific time or location commitments. I am interested in helpful benefits rather than just expensive or flashy benefits. I want to work in an environment where employees are encouraged to work the way they are most productive, given opportunities to learn, and respected.
