I'm a Reader in Cognitive and MIND Psychology and my research focuses on speakers of Minority, Indigenous, Non-standard(ised) and Dialect language varieties that are often forgotten about in psychological research - as well as voice and speech technology. My previous findings show that many of these speakers demonstrate similar cognitive effects as bilinguals, despite self-identifying as monolinguals. This work has been covered by organisations such as the BBC, Duolingo and the Financial Times. Building on this, I’ve recently expanded into voice research, investigating how people perceive and process their own voice, other human voices, and AI-generated voices. My work explores how these different voice types influence self-identity and attention, revealing how both real and artificial voices can be integrated into our sense of self.This research underscores how theoretical insights from cognitive psychology can have significant implications for developing personalized voice technologies, particularly in assistive devices, AI systems, and gaming.
