EditorLiberty Torch Magazine Nov 2005 - Jun 2007I was the last editor of The Liberty Torch magazine, the Army Reserve magazine for th 77th Regional Readiness Command (New York and Northern New Jersey). The magazine was a full-color glossy covering the ceremonies, training, deployments and homecomings of Soldiers attached to the 77th.In addtion to my work at the magazine, I performed public relations duties with the New York and national media, since I worked for the command's public affairs officer.Although the 77th has been downgraded to a brigade and streamlined into another command, its glorious history, especially in the two world wars, left a tremendous impression on me. My favorite reporter, Ernie Pyle, was killed with the 77th on the island of Ie Shima in 1945 by a Japanese sniper.

EditorThe Somerville News Aug 2003 - Jun 2005As the paper's leader, I took the paper from a 20-page monthly with little original content, to a 24-page weekly with all original content and a Web site that receives 700-1,000 hits per day. During those two years, we returned the 35-year-old paper to its proper place in the center of the city's conversations by sponsoring dozens of peotry readings, concerts, comedy nights, candidate's debates and the launching of The Somerville News Writers Festival. By recruiting and training college interns as contributors, I built a vibrant team of ambitious reporters and photographers, many of whom went directly to paid media positions. In his book, "Blue State Blues," which poet and novelist David R. Slavitt wrote about his 2004 campaign for state representative, Slavitt compared the atmosphere at my contributors meetings to his days at Newsweek in the 1960s.
