Profile bio

About Kevin Li

I am a postdoctoral researcher in landscape and agroecology. My work acknowledges that ecology, society, and history play a role in an interconnected landscape, and that sustainable conservation practices extend beyond protected areas into the broader landscape matrix. I develop landscape science as a tool for sustainably and equitably integrating human activity in the landscape. My work addresses the challenges of socioecological complexity in landscapes by: 1) examining landscape processes across spatial scales, 2) simplifying multidimensional environmental data and identifying important drivers, and 3) seeking interdisciplinary connections to explore novel solutions. My research informs a greater mission to facilitate participatory landscape design, through tools that make complex ecological processes accessible and applicable to stakeholders and decision makers. I am also interested in spatial patterns and the impacts of anthropogenic forces (such as land use change and global climate change) on biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and ecosystem services in the landscape. In my current work, I use a genetic algorithm to evolve landscape scenario models of placing pollinator habitat along field margins to find optimal tradeoffs between multiple ecosystem services (pollination, groundwater recharge, and nutrient runoff reduction) and costs to farmers. My dissertation at the University of Göttingen focused on pollinator ecosystem functions in a lowland rainforest transformation landscape in Sumatra (Indonesia) over a range of spatial scales, from within-farm to landscape level. I also have experience working in temperate landscapes (USA) and shade and sun coffee agroecosystems (Puerto Rico and Mexico).
