As a junior lawyer, I support the partners of the firm in various commercial matters. I have carriage of matters and liaise directly with clients, agencies and courts. As Schweizer Kobras has lawyers admitted in Australia, Germany and Switzerland, I frequently liaise with international clients and deal with cross-border transactions. My responsibilities include reviewing and drafting legal documents such as lease agreements, share purchase agreements, loan agreements, trust deeds, wills and powers of attorney. I am incorporating companies and lodge transmission application for registration with Land & Property Information (LPI). I have successfully applied for probate of a will and assisted the executors in the administration of a complex estate including a protective trust, shares in public and private companies and real properties. I have also registered a limited partnership with NSW Fair Trading including incorporating the general partner and drafting the limited partnership agreement with international and domestic trusts and companies as limited partners. I am further responsible for legal translations (German to English and vice versa) and manage the Referendar (German legal trainee) programme provided by the firm.

As a senior paralegal in migration matters, my responsibilities included corresponding with clients and attending client meetings, preparing and submitting visa applications and liaising with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) and other agencies. I also conducted research in corporate law matters and obtained company and property searches. Even though I had no prior knowledge of migration law, I managed to prepare the documents in a manner that DIBP approved even complex visa applications without requests for further information. My organisational skills helped me to efficiently prioritise my work assignments to meet all deadlines.

I obtained property and company searches and kept the minutes of the weekly fee-earners' meeting. I was also responsible for legal translations (German into English and vice versa). I showed initiative by taking on additional tasks and was promoted to senior paralegal.

A "Referendar" is a German trainee lawyer who, after completing university, receives two years of practical judicial and legal training before sitting a state examination for legal admission. Law graduates are employed and paid by a court. The training comprises of several stages that give the "Referendar" experience working under supervision in various fields of law such as working for a judge, the prosecution, a government agency and at a law firm. The traineeship is intended to provide practical knowledge that cannot be taught at university. During my German traineeship, I assisted a judge in the Civil Chamber of the District Court for 5 months as well as assisted a prosecutor in the Department of Public Prosecutions for 3 months. I attended court hearings, reviewed evidence and drafted judgments and orders which were adopted by the judge without major amendments. I also represented the prosecution in court including giving opening statements and oral pleadings.

After I graduated from the German university and before I started my Master of Laws degree at the University of New South Wales in Australia, I worked as a research assistant at Allen & Overy in the Corporate Division in Hamburg, Germany. I was responsible for drafting and reviewing contracts and other legal documents and conducted legal research in the area of corporate and commercial law. I also assisted in an international vendor due diligence by preparing and reviewing documents in a virtual data room. Due to the high standard of my work and my personality, I was offered a graduate position after my return from Australia.
