Studying moral development with Professor Paul Bloom:I led independent research investigating the cross-cultural development of moral frameworks in three separate studies. We examined children’s views about third party punishment, studied altruism by examining childrens’ perspectives on obligations to help an injured child, and evaluated childrens’ views pertaining to social prejudice. In all three studies, moral beliefs of children in the US and in rural Uganda were aligned at age 5, but cultural differences grew with increasing age. We found that color-based bias was culturally dependent and taught by the society in which a child is raised.

Studied social neuroscience with Professor Molly Crockett:I helped implement an NIH-funded, double-blind experiment examining value judgments of art created by people who were described as performing immoral actions, and debriefed participants on its purpose post-experiment. In addition to honing study administration abilities, I developed two key skills which I used when designing and conducting my own study the following summer. First, I learned how to develop and refine virtual study stimuli. Second, through conducting literature reviews, I investigated moral thinking from a philosophical and a psychological perspective, fostering an ability to approach a research question from multiple perspectives.

Conducted pediatric neurosurgery research under Dr. Kristopher Kahle:I helped create a pediatric assessment tool for neurodevelopmental delay and investigated the relationship between congenital hydrocephalus and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). I conducted literature reviews of existing psychopathology diagnostic instruments and assembled data to propose new tool designs. I am writing an article about the genetic and phenotypic relationship between congenital hydrocephalus and ASD, suggesting that both could be considered neurodevelopmental disorders, and conducting an experiment studying the relationship between the two disorders through gene-knockout studies of the Katnal2 gene that produces hydrocephalic mice that exhibit a type of autistic behavior.

Psychiatry research under Professor Hedy Kober:As a research assistant for an NIH-funded, randomized, placebo-controlled trial comparing smoking cessation techniques, I recruited, screened, and interviewed participants, implemented training, and supported data management and analysis. I met weekly with each study participant to conduct interviews, drug tests, two months of placebo and cessation training sessions, and pre- and post-intervention fMRI. I cultivated interview and communication skills and learned to actively listen while scribing and asking questions. Directly interviewing human subjects was challenging and rewarding, and helped prepare me for medical research and the careful diagnostic questioning required of a physician.
